Diese Diplomarbeit untersucht die wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen apokalyptischer Fiktion und der Realitätswahrnehmung in der Zeit des Kalten Krieges in den USA. Zu diesem Zweck gibt die Arbeit Einblicke in die damalige Medienlandschaft der USA und sucht den damals vorherrschenden Zeitgeist der amerikanischen Kalten-Kriegs-Gesellschaft zu proträtieren. Es wird aufgezeigt, inwiefern apokalyptische Fiktion zu dieser Zeit eine bedeutende bilaterale Rolle spielte und wie dadurch der zeitgenössische nukleare Diskurs beeinflusst wurde. Dies soll exemplarisch durch die Analyse zweier populärer apokalyptischer Filme veranschaulicht werden. Die Filme On the Beach (1959) und The Day After (1983) porträtieren beide ein Worst-Case-Szenario, in dem die Protagonisten Zeugen eines Atomkrieges werden und mit dessen katastrophalen Folgen fertig werden müssen. Der theoretische Teil der Arbeit bemüht sich um einen umfassenden Überblick über die Ära des Kalten Krieges. Hierbei wird zuerst der internationale nukleare Diskurs und die Entstehungsgeschichte der "Abschreckungspolitik" des Kalten Krieges beleuchtet. Anschließend wird spezifisch auf den nuklearen Diskurs in den USA eingegangen.Weiters beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit mit dem Kalten Krieg als ein gedankliches Konzept. Es wird untersucht, inwiefern man im Falle des Kalten Krieges von einem imaginären Krieg oder gar von einem Krieg gegen die Vorstellungskraft der Menschen sprechen kann. Hierzu bietet diese Arbeit Einblicke in die moderne Apokalyptik und setzt sich mit der Rolle von Narrativen in Krisenzeiten auseinander. Im analytischen Teil dieser Arbeit werden die Filme On the Beach (1959) und The Day After (1983) als Krisentexte nach dem Paradigma der Apokalyptik interpretiert. Hierbei konzentriert sich die Filmanalyse vor allem auf die signifikante wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen apokalyptischer Fiktion und Realitätswahrnehmung und demonstriert, weshalb man, im Falle des Kalten Krieges, von einem Krieg gegen die Vorstellungskraft sprechen kann. ; This thesis investigates the relationship between apocalyptic fiction and reality during the Cold War era. By exploring the zeitgeist and media landscape of the American Cold War culture, this thesis demonstrates that apocalyptic fiction had a significant bilateral role during those times and influenced the contemporary nuclear discourse. This is illustrated by analyzing two popular apocalyptic movies, On the Beach (1959) and The Day After (1983). Both films portray a worst-case scenario in which the protagonists are confronted with the disastrous consequences of a nuclear war. These movies are not just blockbusters for entertainment but fuel and contribute to the ongoing nuclear discourse about the Cold War era and its politics of deterrence.In its theoretical part, this thesis provides an overview of the Cold War era and reveals how the beginning of the Atomic Age changed the dynamics of power and politics forever. It focusses on the international cultural discourse concerned with nuclear weaponry and illustrates how the politics of deterrence came into being. Afterwards, this thesis focusses on the US- specific nuclear discourse and how it was portrayed in US mainstream media. Additionally, this thesis engages with the Cold War as a concept of thought. It aims at providing a deeper understanding of its intrinsic mechanisms and explains why the Cold War can be classified as a war against peoples imagination. Therefore, this thesis provides an overview of modern apocalypticism research and investigates the role of narratives in the Atomic Age. In its analytical part, the films On the Beach (1959) and The Day After (1983) are interpreted as crisis texts according to the paradigm of apocalypticism. According to this analytical approach, this film analysis focuses on the films contemporary cultural context and investigates how their narratives are related to the political and cultural events of the Cold War. Furthermore, this thesis investigates how the bilateral relationship between fiction and reality impact the films and their public reception. Preliminary studies on Kaneto Shindō's horror film Onibaba (1964) have based their analyses, in a positivist way, on the director's elliptic statements, which inevitably restricted their perspective. Hence there are crucial points that preliminary studies overlooked: Onibaba was a self-criticism of Shindō, who had unintentionally contributed to the post-war Japan's "victimisation narrative" with his early films, inspired by contemporary a-bomb literature. Furthermore, the film draws on many motifs from such popular Western horror films as Frankenstein 1970 (1958) and The Phantom of the Opera (1962) to form an allegorical image of an apocalyptic world, reverted to primitive ages due to the devastation by nuclear world wars. With this comparative study that tries to "unmask" the hidden meanings of this intriguing but equally esoteric film, we aim to contribute to the research on a-bomb literature adaptations and horror cinema.

Die Visionen von der Apokalypse und der Zeit danach beschäftigen Menschen von Beginn an und es besteht der Verdacht, dass sich die Kultur als solche vielleicht auch durch diese Beschäftigung mit ihrem eigenen Endzeit-Telos in ihrer jetzigen Beschaffenheit formiert hat. Die Medien, die diese Weltuntergangserzählungen tradieren helfen, bilden damit also ein weiteres Mal ein Paradigma der Kultur, in der sie kursieren. Die Reihe Post-apocalyptic Studies widmet sich daher zentral dieser Medien-Kultur, ihrer Techniken und ihrer Inhalte, setzt sie zu historischen Diskursen in Bezug und analysiert ihre weitreichenden politischen, kulturellen und mentalitätsgeschichtlichen Wirkungen. The Oracles of Hystaspes were often mentioned during Late Antiquity, specially within religious controversies. Nevertheless, no work with such title has been preserved and, therefore, many questions have arisen and caused debate about it. This article analyzes the arguments of the different sides and examines them carefully, based on both Iranian and non-Iranian sources of the preserved Apocalyptic literature. Though it is true that during the imperial period the Oracles of Hystaspes were taken advantage of with political goals or for religious proselytism, a more detailed analysis also reveals that this work has its origin in the syncretism of Iranian apocalyptic literature with Hellenism. We also explain why the new interpretation of Saošiiant based on Kellens's translation in no way contradicts the traditional interpretation based on Benveniste's translation. ; Los Oráculos de Histaspes fueron muy mencionados durante la Antigüedad Tardía, especialmente en el ámbito de las controversias religiosas. Sin embargo, no se nos ha conservado ninguna obra así titulada; por ello, son diversas las cuestiones que han suscitado encontradas discusiones en torno a ella. Este artículo analiza los argumentos de las distintas posturas y los examina cuidadosamente tomando como base las fuentes iranias y no iranias de la literatura apocalíptica conservada. Si bien es cierto que los Oráculos de Histaspes fueron aprovechados en la época imperial con intereses políticos o de proselitismo religioso, un análisis más detallado revela también indudablemente que la obra tiene su origen en el sincretismo de la apocalíptica irania con el helenismo. Se indica también por qué la nueva interpretación de Saošiiant basada en la traducción que da Kellens no se halla reñida en modo alguno con la interpretación tradicional basada en la traducción que da Benveniste.

This assumption about religious terrorism stems from two challenges in the literature: disproportionate attention to apocalyptic terrorism, and a lack of distinction between religious terrorism and its secular counterpart. This article, therefore, aims to do four things: define and differentiate religiously motivated terrorism from traditional terrorism; investigate three goals of religious terrorism (fomenting the apocalypse, creating a religious government, and establishing a religiously pure state); consider the role of leadership and target selection of religious terrorists; and, finally, suggest a range of counterterrorism strategies based on these observations.
