Abstract
Due to the internationalization of Polish enterprises, it is appropriate to look at the tendency of managers to take up business and compete in the global labor market. The purpose of this article that is of theoretical and empirical character, is, therefore, an attempt to evaluate the mobility of Polish managers, or their willingness to change their place of work outside the home country. The matrix is a theoretical discussion of the importance of mobility for today's corporations. Empiricism refers to the author's own research (these are telephone interviews with 15 managers and two expert opinions) carried out for such this article, and also presented the results of the exploration of other researchers addressing these topics.

This commentary focuses on the theoretical issues raised in this special issue. It is argued that both selection and influence in peer social networks reflect a process of peer contagion. The findings from the special issue studies are briefly reviewed. Some suggestions for future research are made, including the use of multilevel models that integrate interpersonal dynamics with peer network change as well as the use of natural and randomized experimentation to test hypotheses regarding the influence of contexts such as schools on the formation of peer networks. It is hoped that research on peer network can eventually be applied to the design of environments that promote a variety of health behaviors and peer support.

Adolescents' consumption of low‐nutrient, energy‐dense (LNED) food often occurs out of home, and friends may be an important source of influence. This study tested whether observed similarities in LNED food intake among friends result from social influence and also explored underlying psychological mechanisms. Three waves of data were collected over 1 year from Grade 8 students in Australia (N = 378, 54% male), including measures of food intake and related cognitions, and friendships to grademates. The results of longitudinal social network models show that adolescent intake was predicted by their friends' intake, accounting for pre‐existing similarities and other potentially confounding factors. Changes to adolescents' beliefs about LNED food do not appear to be the mechanisms underpinning influence from their friends.

Drawing on insights from economics, psychology, sociology, political science, and policy sciences, this article proposes a definition and measurement strategies for policy bubbles. A policy bubble is a real and/or perceived policy overreaction that is reinforced by positive feedback over an extended period of time. Positive feedback is here integrated in a model of human herding as the key factor that propels this process but also as a key generator of change. The process is conceptualized in terms of the formation, growth, and burst of policy bubbles. This causal‐explanatory understanding of the term allows for the possibility that different modes of policy overreaction lead to different types of human herding, thereby resulting in different types of policy bubbles.

In the 1980s, anthropology set aside a focus on societies defined as radically 'other' to the anthropologists' own. There was little consensus at the time, however, about who might replace the other as the primary object of anthropological attention. In important respects, I argue, its replacement has been the suffering subject. Tracing this change, I consider how it addressed key problems of the anthropology of the other, but I also suggest that some strengths of earlier work – particularly some of its unique critical capacities – were lost in the transition. The conclusion considers how recent trends in anthropology might coalesce in a further shift, this one toward an anthropology of the good capable of recovering some of the critical force of an earlier anthropology without taking on its weaknesses.

Governance theory and planning theory share a tendency to either overlook the role of conflicts in coordination processes or view them as a disruptive force that must be modified or neutralized. In effect, there is little research into the productive role of conflicts in constructing and reconstructing the institutional conditions that make coordination possible. The productive role of conflicts is particularly visible in times of radical change that calls for a recasting of the sedimented world views and practices of the involved actors, as well as the relationship between them. A case study of the formation of new pluricentric regional governance arenas in Denmark provides important insights into how conflicts contribute to a gradual recasting of the institutional conditions that make coordination possible.

AbstractAlthough there have been a small number of empirical studies that analyse northbound border crossings between Mexico and the United States, very few examine the potential impacts of both tolls and exchange rates on the various traffic categories. This effort attempts to partially fill that gap in the applied economics literature by modelling northbound traffic flows at one of the largest regional economies along the border. Results indicate that business cycle fluctuations, variations in the real exchange rate, and changes in real toll tariffs all influence cross border traffic volumes. Tolls on northbound traffic into the United States are assessed by Mexico. The results also indicate that tolls can provide a reliable revenue stream for international bridge infrastructure finance in Mexico.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide insights into the expanding role of trust in the knowledge economy. Specifically it aims to focus on the unique nature of the knowledge economy and the importance of informal and social control provided by the development of trust.Design/methodology/approachThe paper is conceptual and a literature review.FindingsThe intra‐ and inter‐organizational dynamics of the knowledge economy require a unique focus on the development and maintenance of trust. Marketing relationships within and across firms will change and require a renewed emphasis on trust to safeguard the key asset in the knowledge economy, knowledge.Originality/valueThis article adds new insights on organizational trust, specifically under the paradigm of knowledge‐based production systems that characterize a knowledge economy.

Cet article présente l'évolution des variables macro-économiques fondamentales du Venezuela au cours de la période 1999-2011, de façon à démontrer que la politique économique mise en œuvre et l'importante rente pétrolière reçue pendant la présidence d'Hugo Chávez ont exacerbé le modèle d'économie rentière hérité des gouvernements précédents. On soutiendra en particulier qu'au cours de cette période, la dépendance envers la rente pétrolière s'est accrue, le taux de change s'est fortement apprécié (le « mal hollandais »), ce qui a provoqué un affaiblissement de la production exportable, spécifiquement des biens industriels et agro-industriels, un boom des importations qui a accentué le caractère mono-exportateur et rentier de l'économie, et l'accroissement du pouvoir discrétionnaire de l'Etat dans l'utilisation de la rente pétrolière.

This paper investigates the change of the urban periphery, exploring the tension between the socioeconomic, financial, and political implications of postindustrial transitions. It presents and elaborates an analytical framework to conceptualize the interlocked influence of different dimensions of urban development in smaller municipalities, considering in particular how political and electoral dynamics impinge on other aspects of land development. In the article, three types of challenges are thus identified. The paper adopts an explorative approach to detect how political and electoral logics of action affect urban development in the changing periphery. It thus advances that under conditions of metropolitan fragmentation, urban projects are prone to lengthy gridlocks of localistic bargaining, and local governments are unable to fully govern the fundamental challenges of land development.

Because of the lack of any in-depth research on the workings of the cocaine industry in the processing regions and on social changes of the drug trade, scholarly writings on the cocaine industry are full of assumptions and speculation. This article, on the contrary, tries to capture how the illegal cocaine industry and its related violence became integrated into the daily lives of the local residents of the Upper Huallaga, one of Peru's largest cocaine enclaves. It is argued that for those drug smugglers lower on the economic scale, involvement in an illegal industry involves an ongoing sense of economic and physical vulnerability. Moreover, it is described that higher echelons involved lived under a constant threat of violence.

AbstractMuch of the debate between the European and US positions about the labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods has been whether consumers perceive labels as a source of information or as a signal to change behavior. In this paper we provide an experimental framework for examining these roles of information and signaling. While previous studies have focused on the impact of labels on consumer behavior, our interest is also in what happens prior to the expression of aversion to GM-labeled foods. In particular, the experiment design allows the researcher to estimate a lower bound of the informational impact of labels on GM food aversion. The other novel feature of this paper is that, unlike earlier studies, it uses subjects from a developing country.

Many families living in rural poverty endure toxic stress and trauma, contributing to challenges in engaging with their children's schools. Rural schools also face challenges in partnering with these families. Family engagement as a prevention approach, implemented by a team of social workers in collaboration with a rural school district, is presented as a case example to describe an emerging model. The conceptual framework, developed through a community-based participatory research approach, is (a) strengths-based, to support and enhance the parents' existing capacity; (b) trauma-informed, to understand and respond to the physiological and psychosocial impact of toxic stress; and (c) systems-focused, to facilitate change within the school system to make it responsive to the families' needs and strengths.

We present 2009–2010 data on disciplinary exclusions in schools and juvenile incarcerations from one state in the United States to demonstrate that American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) students: (a) are disproportionately overrepresented in disciplinary exclusions from the classroom, (b) lose 4.5 times as many student days as White students due to disciplinary exclusions, and (c) are removed to alternative education for relatively minor offenses. We then present an overview of the literature on culturally responsive school environments, the Native community's recommendations to improve outcomes for AI/AN students and approaches to educational systems changes that might alleviate disciplinary exclusions of AI/AN students.Keypoints

Abstract
This article examines how EU rights and laws serve as legal opportunity structures for women's rights activists in Europe. Further, it examines what effects this transnational activism has on the permanence and inclusion of public interests and gender equality in EU legal and political processes. The analysis examines the legal domain of EU women's rights over a thirty-year period. Methodologically, the study relies on case law analysis, primary document collections, and interviews with non-governmental organizations and governmental elites at both the EU and the national level. I ask how legal mobilization can serve as a catalyst for institutional change (by influencing litigation and legislative action), and how this effects subsequent EU-level women's rights mobilization and public inclusion.
