The conjunction of print and political revolutions between 1770 and 1820 generated a body of literary history writing whose competing narratives serve functions distinct from the consolidating and regulatory ones implicit in the genre's modern identification with canonicity. This first full-length investigation of period literary history argues that it accommodated adversarial positions as well as consensus, spoke to multiple readerships, fostered provisionality along with the search for certainty, and advanced a sense of historical locatedness. After 1820, however, its mediatory powers withered in response to the ascendancy of literary criticism, unease about the numbers and diversity of readers, and the perception of a national crisis post-Peterloo. Drawing on collective biography, memoir, antiquarianism, the novel, secret history, specimens, reviews and Institutional lectures, the study invites a fundamental rethinking of the place of literary history in late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century print culture, and hence in the wider social and political movements it was both shaped by and itself helped shape.

This essay reflects on the contribution made by Timed Out: Art and the Transnational Caribbean (2011) to alternative futures for the Caribbean-focused study of art and its histories. Wainwright emphasizes the need for better attention to the complex "geopolitics of time" that is central to the formation of Caribbean creative experience, and outlines the discursive field, the art market, and the policy and funding landscape through which Caribbean and diaspora artists move. In response to the discussion of Timed Out in this issue of Small Axe, Wainwright explains the continuing need to explode the existing dominant art canons (while highlighting the problematic assimilation of counterdiscursive and plural positions) and proposes various pathways by which the Caribbean's role in changing powerful modes and priorities of art historical scholarship may be extended fruitfully to the wider humanities.

The task of reviewing general texts is especially difficult. Many different objectives may legitimately be attempted, and it is easy to allow one's personal interests to enter into the appraisal of objectives. It has long been my conviction that every author should be allowed to choose his objectives and to adopt such means as may be suitable in their fulfillment. Once these choices have been made, the author imposes a task upon himself which may legitimately be examined, both in respect of its intrinsic merit and in respect of the execution of the plan. Mr. Hacker's book presents a number of especially interesting problems in these regards.
