Mit Beiträgen vonFlorian Bader, Joachim Behnke, Andreas Blätte, Sebastian Dumm, Mennatallah El-Assady, Thorsten Faas, Valentin Gold, Simon Hegelich, Christian Hoops, Pascal Jürgens, Andreas Jungherr, Cathleen Kantner, Kelly Lancaster, Christian Müller, Simon Munzert, Dominic Nyhuis, Maximilian Overbeck, Christian Rohrdantz, Christian Rubba, Gary S. Analyzes the specialization & hybridization of subdisciplines within the contemporary social sciences. Although communication between disciplines continues to proliferate, it is contended that specialized subdisciplines become hermetically sealed from competition; consequently, the hybridization of disciplines occurs only on a macrodisciplinary level. An analysis of R. Goodin & H. D. Klingemann's (1996) handbook of political science & Neil Smelser's (1988 [see abstract 89c01170]) handbook of sociology reveals the theoretical isolation experienced by the newly formed subdisciplines. It is argued that the historical overview of the social sciences demonstrates that hybridization & specialization are the primary trajectories for scientific advancement; in fact, most contemporary Nobel prize recipients function within the domain of hybrid fields. Hybridization is facilitated by diffusing theoretical concepts, borrowing methodological approaches, & generating interdisciplinary theories. It is concluded that the influence of multidisciplinary approaches may annihilate the traditional classificatory system of social science disciplines. 1 Photograph, 30 References. Interventions, 1961-2001. Science sociale & action politique,
Pierre Bourdieu.
