Property, or property rights, remains one of the most central elements in moral, legal, and political thought. It figures centrally in the work of figures as various as Grotius, Locke, Hume, Smith, Hegel and Kant. This collection of essays brings fresh perspective on property theory, from both legal and political theoretical perspectives, and is essential reading for anyone interested in the nature of property. Edited by two of the world's leading theorists of property, James Penner and Michael Otsuka, this volume brings together essays which consider, amongst other topics, property and public law, the importance of legal forms in property theory, whether use or exclusion are most essential to our understanding of property, distributive justice, Lockean and Grotian theories, the common ownership of the Earth, and Confucian ideas of property.

What explains the great variability in economic growth and political development across countries? Institutional and organizational analysis has developed since the 1970s into a powerful toolkit, which argues that institutions and norms rather than geography, culture, or technology are the primary causes of sustainable development. Institutions are rules that recognized authorities create and enforce. Norms are rules created by long-standing patterns of behavior, shared by people in a society or organization. They combine to play a role in all organizations, including governments, firms, churches, universities, gangs, and even families. This introduction to the concepts and applications of institutional and organizational analysis uses economic history, economics, law, and political science to inform its theoretical framework. Institutional and organizational analysis becomes the basis to show why the economic and political performance of countries worldwide have not converged, and reveals the lessons to be learned from it for business, law, and public policy

Annually, approximately 66,000 women are violently killed in countries around the world. While historically these crimes were grouped into the general category of homicide, femicide, the murder of women because of their gender, is now being recognized as a unique issue and a hate crime. However, some assert that the fact that 80 percent of murder victims are male suggests that the issue of femicide is being blown out of proportion. This volume explores the forms femicide takes around the world and potential means of combatting it, and discusses the varying perspectives on the usefulness of its categorization.
"This book incorporates elements of antebellum history, Underground Railroad studies, and folklore history. Washington County, PA is located at the border of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and so proved to be a key junction in the 19th century Underground Railroad. Mainwaring goes in depth to separate legends and truth of the actual story of the Railroad in this region, and simultaneously demonstrates how difficult it is to distinguish between fact and fiction. Emotion, memory, family myths, and wishful thinking all combine to obscure the reality of the Underground Railroad, both here and elsewhere in the US."--Provided by publisher
