In this paper an alternative approach with regard to poverty measurement is discussed: the so-called decomposition approach (see also FaMa discussion paper no. 2/23009). This method differentiates between various social groups in the sense that for each group a separate poverty line is determined. E. g., household size might be a criterion for such a social differentiation. By doing this, the problem of traditional poverty measurement to refer to income-independent equivalence scales is principally avoided. Moreover, the further problem of the traditional method, namely to determine a (general) poverty line as a more or less arbi-trary fraction of society's mean welfare level, does not exist, on principle, in the decomposition approach.
Present author's own calculations reveal higher poverty levels indicated by this approach compared with the conventional method of measuring (income) poverty. Since it appears to be realistic that some people perform their poverty assessments through a "mixture" of their own group's and overall welfare levels, at a plausible degree of economies of scale (i. e., Buhmann et al.'s θ > 0.65) the poverty levels of the decomposition approach can be interpreted as upper limits for the "true" level of poverty, and, conversely, the degree of poverty ascertained by the conventional approach can be seen as a lower limit for "true" poverty.

"Measuring the employment status according to the labour force concept of the International Labour Organization (ILO concept) is far from being straightforward. By defining employment as any economic activity of at least one hour per week, the ILO guidelines apply a strictly economic concept which risks to conflict with everyday life perception. Consequently, small and informal jobs are likely to be overlooked in household surveys. The employment status according to the ILO
concept is the conceptual backbone of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and at the same time it is required as a compulsory variable for the European census round. Due to its particular importance, the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) carried out extensive research in order to improve the survey measurement in the LFS and at the same time to develop a suitable approach
for the requirements of the household survey carried out under the census 2011. The paper will focus on the impact of the questionnaire design. It is based upon the results of a follow-up survey which was carried out in the Microcensus in 2008, a large-scale field test for the preparation of the census as well as a number of cognitive laboratory tests." "Im Rahmen der europaweiten Zensus-Erhebungsrunde im Jahr 2011 wird zum ersten Mal seit 1987 auch im vereinigten Deutschland wieder eine Volkszählung stattfinden, diesmal allerdings nicht in Form einer Vollerhebung, sondern in Form einer kosten- und ressourcenschonenden registergestützten Erhebung. Diese wird flankiert durch eine Haushaltsstichprobe, aus der erstens in den Registern nicht erfasste Informationen gewonnen werden sollen und zweitens eine Abschätzung der Zahl der Karteileichen (KAL) und Fehlbestände (FEB) in den Melderegistern erfolgen soll. Aus den Register- und Stichprobendaten sollen möglichst verlässliche und genaue Schätzungen der Totalwerte vorgenommen werden. Ziel des von DESTATIS eingesetzten Stichprobenforschungsprojektes ist es, Antworten auf die Frage zu geben, welches Stichprobendesign unter den gegebenen Restriktionen empfohlen werden kann. Darüber hinaus sollen Schätzstrategien entwickelt werden, die zur Verwendung im Zensus 2011 vorgeschlagen werden können. Der vorliegende Aufsatz stellt einige wichtige Erkenntnisse aus dem Forschungsprojekt dar, wobei ein Schwerpunkt auf der Darstellung eines optimalen Stichprobendesigns liegt." (Autorenreferat)

This paper outlines a method that analyses how cohort and period childbearing postponement and recuperation (P&R) are reflected in total period fertility rate (TPFR) trends in low-fertility populations in recent decades. The method is rooted in the trailblazing ideas developed by Ryder (1951 and 1964), namely that childbearing P&R occurs in the life of individual women and can be summarised in the lifetime experiences of birth cohorts. Cohort childbearing age patterns are then translated into period childbearing age patterns and the effects of the P&R process on the TPFRs are revealed by summarising period ASFRs of young women and of older women and analysing their interaction over time in 36 low-fertility populations. The method is complementary to methods pioneered by Bongaarts and Feeney (1998) which estimate tempo-adjusted TPFRs. These demonstrate the degree to which TPFRs are distorted. The method described in this paper reveals the internal mechanism generating TPFR trends; it exposes the demographic structural causes generating TPFR trends and demonstrates why TPFRs are moving in a certain direction. The following findings stand out: 1. All low-fertility populations have experienced TPFR troughs at some point during the past four decades. The troughs occurred because low fertility among young women of young cohorts starting to postpone childbearing overlaps with low fertility among older women of older cohorts who had not postponed births. The troughs occurred in Western countries mostly during the early 1980s and in Central andEastern Europearound 2000. 2. The structural causes of the increase in TPFRs in the late 1990s and early in the 21st century were different in Western countries compared to Central andEastern Europe. The former were experiencing the concluding phases of the P&R process. In contrast, in Central andEastern Europepopulations were experiencing the initial phases of childbearing P&R. It was a historical coincidence that TPFRs were increasing in most low-fertility populations almost simultaneously around the beginning of the 21st century. 3. These TPFR increases were predominantly the consequence of changes in cohort childbearing age patterns, i.e. changes in the timing of fertility. They were not generated by fertility quantum increases. During this period in almost all the low-fertility countries TPFRs were rising while corresponding total cohort fertility rates were declining.

"The EDCA-Survey is a large scale CATI telephone survey conducted in three countries: Germany, France and the Netherlands. The survey was designed to test theoretical arguments on the effects of ethnic diversity on social capital and civic engagement. This aim demands for a sophisticated design. The survey is not representative for the entire populations of Germany, France or the Netherlands. Instead, the basic population is the population over the age of 18 in 74 selected regions in Germany, France and the Netherlands that have sufficient language skills to conduct an interview in the language of their country of residence, or in the case of the oversample of people with
Turkish migration background to conduct the interview in Turkish. The aim of the survey is to enable the comparison of these 74 regions, which vary on contextual characteristics of interest. In addition, the EDCA-Survey includes one oversample of migrants in general (24%) and an additional second oversample of Turkish migrants in particular (14%). The oversampling is the same within each of the 74 regions, each of which has about 100 observations and seven specially chosen cities even 500. This survey design is an important characteristic of the EDCA-Survey and distinguishes it from other available data. This is important since one aim of the EDCA-Survey is to enable the aggregation of contextual characteristics from the survey itself. Overall, 10.200 completed interviews were conducted - 7500 in Germany, 1400 in France and 1300 in the Netherlands." (author's abstract)

"Im Beitrag wird zunächst auf methodologischer und methodischer Ebene diskutiert, wie eine transnationale Perspektive in die eigene Forschung integriert werden kann. Dabei wird auf der Basis des Konzepts der Artikulation (Laclau/ Mouffe; Hall) ein Instrumentarium entwickelt, mit dessen Hilfe sich hybride Verortungen und deren Verstrickung und Einbettung in dominante Diskurse, 'Achsen der Ungleichheit' (Klinger/ Knapp/ Sauer) und Herrschaftsdimensionen aufzeigen lassen. Die Ergebnisse einer solchen Analyse werden anschließend am Beispiel eines Interviews vorgestellt. Der Fokus der Analyse liegt dabei auf Positionierungen, die im Kontext Männlichkeit und Migration eingenommen werden. Hier lassen sich Unterschiede finden, die zu einer Diskussion der Frage führen, in welchem Wechselverhältnis Multilokalität und Genderverhältnisse stehen." (Autorenreferat)

Es gibt keine zufälligen Zeugen, sondern nur Personenkonstellationen, die sich offenkundig aufgrund spezifischer Umstände so ergeben mussten, wie sie sich ergeben haben. Diese Umstände werden jedoch nicht durch die Rekonstruktion des Tathergangs ersichtlich. Vielmehr macht erst der Nachvollzug von Lebensverläufen die konkreten Beziehungen der Tatbeteiligten zueinander plastisch. Genau dies unterscheidet das naturwissenschaftliche Sachverständigengutachten von der soziologischen Analyse: Anstelle der Schlussfolgerung vom Beweis auf die Umstände, die den Beweis "faktisch" zum Beweis gemacht haben (das meint die "materiellen" Umstände einer Straftat), steht die spezifische Figuration der Akteure (idealtypisch: von Täter, Opfer, Zeugen) zueinander. Sie kann von entscheidender Wichtigkeit für das Urteil sein. Deshalb gehört es zu den Binsenweisheiten der Kriminalistik, im Zuge der Aufdeckung einer Straftat nahe liegende Verbindungslinien (insbesondere Familienverhältnisse) zu kontrollieren - eine Spurensuche in der Biographie von Tätern und Opfern, die letztlich ebenfalls der Rekonstruktion des Tatgeschehens dient. Nicht ohne Grund haftet auch jenen Nachforschungen, die Biografen vornehmen, auf dass der Lebensverlauf ihrer "Zielperson" sich sukzessive enthüllen möge, ab einem gewissen Punkt der Recherche (spätestens dann, wenn es um die feinsten Einzelheiten und die verstreutesten Belege geht) die Aura einer quasi-kriminalistischen Feinarbeit an, die umgangssprachlich oft mit dem Fahndungsgespür von Kriminalbeamten und Detektiven verglichen wird - und diesem Berufshabitus wohl auch gar nicht so fern steht. "With the development of household budget systems and with regard to the requirements of the European Union with new EU-SILC approaches, the cumulation of cross-section surveys to an integrated information system is recently discussed and required. In particular the reconstruction of household budget surveys should deliver yearly results as well multi-annual sufficient large samples to allow in depth analyses. This study contributes by a general conceptual foundation of the cumulation of cross-sections and an application which in particular evaluates the new cumulation concept with actual large official samples: the cross sectional cumulation of five yearly Continuous Household Budget Surveys (Laufende Wirtschaftsrechnungen, LWR) which will be compared to the large quinquennial Sample Survey of Income and Expenditures (Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe, EVS) of the German Federal Statistical Office. Therewith the sensitivity of the cumulation concept with its alternatives is evaluated for private household consumption expenditures of selected expenditure groups. A recommendation concludes." Diese Arbeit diskutiert die Anwendung der qualitativen Methode der "Verstehenden Typenbildung" auf einen bestimmten Kontext, die psychoanalytische Psychotherapie suizidaler Männer. Der Fokus der Arbeit liegt dabei auf einem spezifischen Abschnitt der Methode, die Validierung im Rahmen einer Wiederholung des Gruppendiskussionsanteils durch eine Gruppe externer Expert/innen. Die Daten von Psychotherapiefällen, zunächst analysiert durch die originäre Gruppe in Deutschland, wurden erneut durch eine Londoner Gruppe analysiert, die die Aufgabe eines blinden Vergleichs übernahm. Wir beschreiben den Beitrag der Verstehenden Typenbildung zur Erkenntnisgewinnung auf dem Gebiet der psychoanalytischen Forschung und die Prozesse, wie diese Daten analysiert werden können. Hierzu werden die vergleichenden Ergebnisse der ersten (deutschen) und der zweiten (britischen) Analyse präsentiert und nach Ähnlichkeiten und Differenzen analysiert. Die Arbeit schließt mit einer Bewertung der Vorteile und Einschränkungen im Hinblick auf das Ausmaß moderater Generalisierbarkeit dieser Ergebnisse in diesem Forschungsgebiet.

"We suggest to use a factor model based backdating procedure to construct historical Euro-area macroeconomic time series data for the pre-Euro period. We argue that this is a useful alternative to standard contemporaneous aggregation methods. The paper investigates for a number of Euro-area variables whether forecasts based on the factorbackdated data are more precise than those obtained with standard area-wide data. A recursive pseudo-out-of-sample forecasting experiment using quarterly data and a forecasting period 2000Q1-2007Q4 is conducted. Our results suggests that some key variables (e.g. real GDP and in ation) can indeed be forecasted more precisely with the factor-backdated data." (author's abstract)

Die Unterscheidung von Forschung über die Bildung und Forschung in der Bildung (STENHOUSE 1981) hat viel zur Entwicklung einer angewandten Praxisforschung in Bildungskontexten beigetragen, wenngleich es immer noch wenige Lehrende an Hochschulen gibt, die ihre eigene Praxis aktiv erforschen. Noch seltener sind hier Praktikerinnen und Praktiker, die persönliche und professionelle Wechselwirkungen kultureller Vielfalt im Hochschulalltag kritisch reflektieren (BRUNNER 2006), wenngleich die "internationalen Studierenden" den wechselseitigen Dialog zwischen dem lokalen Hochschulpersonal und den Studierenden unter Anerkennung der verschiedenen Realitäten und Wissensformen seit Langem einfordern (KOEHNE 2006).
In diesem Beitrag erläutere ich, wie das Paradigma der Narrationsforschung mich im Rahmen meiner eigenen Promotionsforschung mit post-graduierten Studierenden aus vielen Kulturen im britischen Hochschulsystem bei der Erkundung unterschiedlicher Realitäten und Wissensdeutungen über Lernen und Lehren angeleitet und zugleich herausgefordert hat. Ich werde aufzeigen, dass Praxisforschung ein iterativer Prozess ist, in dem Forschung und Praxis unauflöslich miteinander verbunden sind. Durch die autoethnografische Exploration meiner eigenen Praxis bemühe ich mich, meine "subject positions, social locations, interpretations, and personal experiences" fortlaufend durch das "refracted medium of narrators' voices" (CHASE 2005, S.666) zu erkunden. Einige exemplarische Einblicke dazu werden im Zuge dieses Beitrags näher dargestellt.

In particular, there is a clear need for both analytical and methodological progress in order to understand educational pathways through the life course and how they lead to different outcomes. This paper identifies the theoretical and methodological challenges of studying education across the life course and describes the structure of the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) in Germany." This article aims at explaining the clustering of economic activity using instruments of new institutional economics, taking into account well-known descriptive characteristics of the cluster, as well as recent developments in research on hybrid institutional agreements, primarily, the research conducted by Michael Porter, Claude Ménard and others.
