In this book Robert Audi presents an original ethics of conduct, spanning moral theory, practical ethics, and theories of obligation and value. Conduct is determined not just by what we do, but also by why and how we do it. To integrate these dimensions of conduct, Audi clarifies the relation between intention and obligation, explains the difference between moral rightness and moral worth, and describes myriad manners of human actions. He also clarifies major moral standards such as justice, fidelity, beneficence, and liberty, and explores ethics from the perspectives of the theory of action, the epistemology of moral principles, the metaphysics of normative properties, and the value of human experiences. His concluding chapters offer a theory of reasons and values and propose an original theory of value.

Dieses Buch bietet eine verständliche und kompakte Einführung in die Nutzung von KI-Systemen in öffentlichen Verwaltungen. Es beantwortet folgende Fragen: Was bedeutet Künstliche Intelligenz? Plato's moral realism rests on the Idea of the Good, the unhypothetical first principle of all. It is this, as Plato says, that makes just things useful and beneficial. That Plato makes the first principle of all the Idea of the Good sets his approach apart from that of virtually every other philosopher. This fact has been occluded by later Christian Platonists who tried to identify the Good with the God of scripture. But for Plato, theology, though important, is subordinate to metaphysics. For this reason, ethics is independent of theology and attached to metaphysics. This book challenges many contemporary accounts of Plato's ethics that start with the so-called Socratic paradoxes and attempt to construct a psychology of action or moral psychology that makes these paradoxes defensible. Rather, Lloyd Gerson argues that Plato at least never thought that moral realism was defensible outside of a metaphysical framework.

Nationalism has long been a normatively and empirically contested concept, associated with democratic revolutions and public goods provision, but also with xenophobia, genocide, and wars. Moving beyond facile distinctions between 'good' and 'bad' nationalisms, the authors argue that nationalism is an empirically variegated ideology. Definitional disagreements, Eurocentric conceptualizations, and linear associations between ethnicity and nationalism have hampered our ability to synthesize insights. This Element proposes that nationalism can be broken down productively into parts based on three key questions: (1) Does a nation exist? (2) How do national narratives vary? (3) When do national narratives matter?

Studies on ancient urbanity either concerns individual buildings or the city as a whole. This volume, instead, addresses a meso-scale of urbanity: the socio-spatial organisation of ancient cities. Its temporal focus is on Late Republican and Imperial Italy, and more specifically the cities of Pompeii and Ostia. Referring to a praxeological and phenomenological perspective, it looks at neighbourhoods and city quarters as basic categories of design and experience. With the terms 'neighbourhood and 'city quarter' the volume proposes two different methodological approaches: Neighbourhood here refers to the face-to-face relation between people living next to each other – thus the small-scale environment centred around a house and an individual. Neighbourhoods thus do not constitute a (collectively defined) urban territory with clear borders, but are rather constituted by individual experiences. In contrast, city quarters are understood as areas that share certain characteristics

The study of politics in the MENA region has traditionally been dominated by historical and case study approaches. In this innovative book, Özgür Özdamar and Sercan Canbolat instead adopt a social science-based methodology to reconsider the dynamics of power and leadership in Africa and the Middle East. By analysing the psychological profiles of fourteen leaders across eight countries and three non-state organizations, they develop a nuanced portrait of modern leadership. Using this approach, the authors are able to draw connections between apparently disparate political ideologies, from Sunni Islamism to Shia revolutionism, from secular nationalism and armed non-state groups. Demonstrating the previously unacknowledged commonalities and divergences in these leaders' approaches, Özdamar and Canbolat illuminate their tactics and strategies and offer novel insights into how best to negotiate with them.

Gender inequality is a global problem. The responsibility of the business sector, as one of the main agents of the global market, is to advocate for the economic empowerment of women by recognizing them as agents of growth and development in their various roles. This speaks directly to the advancement of Goal 5, Gender Equality, of the Sustainable Development Goals. Economy, Gender and Academy: A Pending Conversation provides the quality information needed to analyze economic growth and the modernization of business management as well as design effective public policies that counteract the gender gap and allow for greater participation of women in society. Chapters explore a number of issues related to gender equality in Latin America and the Caribbean including the status of gender equity following the Covid-19 pandemic, gender equity within organizations, and gender policies and the teaching of gender equity. A unique geographical assessment, Economy, Gender and Academy: A Pending Conversation offers to generate commitment around professional development to contribute to the construction of a more egalitarian society.

It is generally accepted that climate change is happening and that steps need to be taken to alleviate this. One action which has become prominent is that of achieving net zero, which has been interpreted in terms of emissions of CO2 and other gases. Net zero cannot be achieved by anyone, any organization or even any country acting alone: a great number of actions need to be taken by individuals and organisations and these will differ according to their location and the nature of the organization involved. Achieving Net Zero brings together chapters to examine these challenges from a range of perspectives, various regions and industries, each presenting unique outlooks. From steps on the journey to net zero and sustainability rhetoric, to case studies in Angola and Mauritius, this edited collection helps facilitate best practice that can be adopted on a global scale. Developments in Corporate Governance and Responsibility offers the latest research on topical issues international experts and has practical relevance to business managers.
