Delineating gender and cultural identities is closely related to power. Rarely, if ever, are individuals permitted to freely choose how they wish to live their lives as women or men, as members or outsiders vis-à-vis the societal mainstream. This issue of Al-Raida deals with the many forms of "notbelonging" and the struggle for recognition within the member states of the Arab League. It is divided into five sections reflecting the disparate vantage points from which non-Arab women have viewed their role in the Arab world over a period of over 150 years.

The main purpose of this research was to identify major political issues of common concern to selected Arab contemporary poets namely, Salah Abdel Sabor, Nizar Qabbani, Ahmad Najm and Muthafar Al-Nawab. Based on such issues we were able to construct certain Arab political narrative. The relevance of that narrative to Arab political reality is then assessed. Content analysis was used to identify major political issues. The method of deconstruction and reconstruction was mainly used to follow the political narrative. Finally, we utilized relevant literature to Arab politics to assess relevance of such narrative to Arab political reality. In conclusion, we argued that although this is one narrative of Arab politics, its relevance to Arab political reality cannot be denied or dismissed.

The upheavals that have shaken the Arab world since December 2010 have to a large extent been shaped by the behaviour of the security services in each country. As of December 2011, no clear pattern had emerged, and differences in the employment, cohesion, performance and effectiveness of military and internal security forces were notable throughout the region. These differences can be explained by factors such as varying levels of pay and benefits; sectarian, political and tribal loyalties; internal organisation; differentiation between, and selective deployment of, units; professionalism and politicisation of the senior ranks; and use of foreign mercenaries. "Unlike most writing on Arab-Iran relations, which looks at specific episodes and specific countries, this book, taking a long term view, assesses the overall dynamics of the relationship, discussing in particular how far religion or politics drives the relationship. It argues that although Iran asserts that religion is a key factor underpinning a coherent approach to international relations, in fact what turns out to be the key factor is the politics of particular circumstances and Iran's specific interests. The book considers Iran's differing reactions to the Arab uprisings of 2011 onwards, showing that while Iran supported the uprisings in some countries it sided with repressive governments in other countries. The book also examines Iran's reaction to its own outbreak of popular discontent in 2009 which was controlled by what has been considered as severe repression and explores how Iran is viewed by ordinary people in different Arab countries"--
