The article analyzes discussions around the documentary film Shoah, by Claude Lanzmann, conducted in the uncensored press in communist Poland. In the literature on the subject, a popular thesis claims that the democratic opposition in Poland, like the authorities of the Polish People's Republic, subjected this film to explicit criticism. The authors' research into discussions about the Holocaust in the Polish independent press leads to the opposite conclusion. Ours analysis shows that authors publishing in the underground press had varied reactions to Lanzmann's film. Voices opposing the official campaign against the director and his film predominate (which did not mean a complete lack of criticism vis-à-vis some of the movie's features). We found only two opinions that can be considered clearly negative. The debate about Lanzmann's film is important because it shows the complexity of the democratic opposition's attitude of toward Polish-Jewish history and memory. In the opposition elite's view of history, two currents ran in parallel, often in statements authored by the same people. On the one hand, the trend was primarily affirmative, as a reaction to the communist propaganda that bypassed or completely distorted some aspects of Polish history. On the other hand, there was also a tendency to include more controversial or even clearly shameful aspects of the history of Poland.

Gegen das Vergessen: Der Holocaust aus der Sicht eines Opfers des Nationalsozialismus Was mit der Wannseekonferenz begann, die die Organisation der Deportation und des Massenmords an den europäischen Juden beschloss, durchlitt Filip Müller (1922 - 2013) wie kaum ein anderer. Wer wie er KZ und Zwangsdienst im Sonderkommando Auschwitz-Birkenau mehr als drei Jahre er- und überlebt hat, der gehört zu den wichtigsten Zeugen des Grauens des Holocaust - und ist für sein Leben gezeichnet. 1979/80 veröffentlichte er seinen Zeugen-Bericht »Sonderbehandlung« auf Deutsch. Claude Lanzmann undertook his Holocaust film, "Shoah" in 1985 with a well-developed sense of the difficulties of the enterprise. He had seen fictional films on the subject, as well as the US teledrama of 1978, which he despised. The cinematic possibilities offered by neither fiction nor documentary quite suited Lanzmann. "Shoah" is a work of witness, and intervenes in controversies(especially in Poland). But if it is a documentary film of the Holocaust, itis rather a strange one. It is set entirely in the present, not the past; itconsists principally of scenes in which survivors of the Holocaust simply tell their stories to Lanzmann, often via an interpreter; it is largely devoid of the expected images of the Holocaust film. In addition it is a demanding nine-and-a-half hours long. "Shoah" seems to have documentary elements and also fictional elements. It mingles genres and disturbs conventions perhaps morethan any other Holocaust film and does so throughout. (Original abstract - amended)

Der Artikel verbindet Walter Benjamins Konzept des dialektischen Bildes und Gilles Deleuze's Konzept des Zeit-Bildes, um einen Ansatz zur Nutzung des Films als Instrument historischer Forschung zu entwickeln. Der Gedankengang wird unter anderem anhand der Filme "Die Patriotin" von Alexander Kluge und "Shoah" von Claude Lanzmann entwickelt. Film als historische Forschung grenzt sich sachlich gegenüber der Nutzung von Film als historischer Quelle, der Filmgeschichte oder der populärwissenschaftlichen Vermittlung von Geschichte im Film dadurch ab, den Forschungsprozess selbst im Film zu verorten und damit den in der Forschung gewonnenen Erkenntnisgewinn als medienspezifisch auszuweisen. Darum steht dieser Ansatz der Vorstellung von Geschichte als einem gegebenen Gegenstand, der aufzufinden wäre entgegen und beruft sich auf einen Begriff von Geschichte als Praxis der (spezifisch historischen) Aneignung von Gegenwart. Die dem Medium Film eigene Form der Wissensproduktion und die Aneignung der philosophischen Begriffe von Deleuze aus der Perspektive der kritischen Theorie erweist sich für einen solchen Ansatz kritischer Geschichtswissenschaft als besonders produktiv.

Political responsibilities for systemic mass violence have been subordinated to the moral guilt and legal liability of perpetrators and collaborators, while the role of the bystander has been narrowly construed in terms of charitable rescue or negligence. This dominant victim–perpetrator framework ignores the complex political dimensions of bystander responsibilities for systemic mass violence, especially those responsibilities that stem from the benefits that bystanders receive. The films of Claude Lanzmann, Rithy Panh, and Yael Hersonski contain elements of an alternative framework of bystander responsibility and also can serve as catalysts for the political education of bystander beneficiaries and those from whom they have benefited.

The Nazis' persecution of the Jews during the Holocaust included the creation of prisoner hierarchies that forced victims to cooperate with their persecutors. Many in the camps and ghettos came to hold so-called "privileged" positions, and their behavior has often been judged as self-serving and harmful to fellow inmates. Such controversial figures constitute an intrinsically important, frequently misunderstood, and often taboo aspect of the Holocaust. Drawing on Primo Levi's concept of the "grey zone," this study analyzes the passing of moral judgment on "privileged" Jews as represented by writers, such as Raul Hilberg, and in films, including Claude Lanzmann's Shoah and Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List. Negotiating the problems and potentialities of "representing the unrepresentable," this book engages with issues that are fundamental to present-day attempts to understand the Holocaust and deeply relevant to reflections on human nature.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the uses of the archives as deployed in three films by Rithy Panh: Bophana: A Cambodian Tragedy, S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine and Duch, Master of the Forges of Hell. Starting with the French intellectual debate about representations of the Shoah that fall in two opposite camps articulated around Jean-Luc Godard and Claude Lanzmann concerning the use of photographic and audiovisual archives to represent totalitarian mass killings, the intention is to show how Rithy Panh bypasses this polarisation in his films using the archives with three main functions: the interpellation-archive, the body-archive, and the spectral archive.

Vor einer Trivialisierung des Holocaust warnend, bezeichnete Claude Lanzmann vor acht Jahren den Regisseur Steven Spielberg als "eine Art big brother der Erinnerung". Damit gehörte Lanzmann zu einem Kreis von Historikern, Publizisten und Gedenkstättenmitarbeitern, die massive Kritik an Spielbergs ambitioniertem Vorhaben äußerten, weltweit möglichst viele Überlebende des Holocaust zu befragen. Die Gegenstimmen waren vielfältig und bezogen sich unter anderem auf die in den 1990er-Jahren noch gewöhnungsbedürftige Tatsache, dass Spielberg die digitalisierten Videointerviews in einem computergestützten, internetfähigen Riesenarchiv des Holocaust speichern wollte. Zudem bestand die Sorge, Spielbergs Medienpräsenz und erfolgreiche Sponsorenwerbung werde dazu führen, dass anderen, seit Jahrzehnten arbeitenden Oral-History-Projekten keinerlei Förderung mehr zukomme. Beanstandet wurde auch, dass nicht professionell ausgebildete Personen als Interviewer eingesetzt wurden. Wegen der hohen Zahl archivierter Aussagen von Überlebenden werde sich der inhaltliche Fokus von den Getöteten hin zu jenen verschieben, die der Ermordung entgangen waren. So werde die Geschichte des Holocaust als Geschichte eines Triumphs erzählt, die sie historisch nicht sei. Die Interviews seien darauf angelegt, genau jene Gefühle hervorzurufen, die Raul Hilberg für unlauter hielt: "There is nothing to be taken from the Holocaust that imbues anyone with hope or any thought of redemption." Tatsächlich kann die Interviewsammlung Spielbergs vielzitierten und wegen seiner Assoziation zu verbrannten Leichen etwas obszön wirkenden Anspruch, "jedes Körnchen Asche" aufzusammeln, nicht einlösen. Denn diejenigen, die sprechen können, haben, wie Primo Levi es nannte, "den tiefsten Punkt des Abgrunds" nicht berührt. Deutlich wird jedoch Spielbergs nachdrücklicher, fast obsessiv wirkender Versuch, vergehende Erinnerungen an den Holocaust vor dem Vergessen bannen zu wollen.

Résumé Dans ce texte sur le film S21, la machine de mort khmère rouge , il s'agit d'analyser la construction d'un récit partagé entre les victimes et les bourreaux. Rithy Panh entrecroisant savamment l'archive et la fiction, veut rendre sa puissance imaginaire à tout un peuple. Seule cette puissance-là est en mesure de redonner sa vitalité symbolique à une mémoire jusque-là inapte à la parole et à la représentation. En quoi Rithy Panh opère selon un régime de réappropriation de l'histoire qui distingue ses gestes cinématographiques de ceux de Claude Lanzmann sur la Shoah. Là où ce dernier fait le procès de l'oubli des crimes, Rithy Panh, dans le respect absolu de la douleur des victimes, produit l'espace imaginaire d'un partage dans la douleur présente.
