• Summary: This article examines ethically difficult situations related to organizational conditions reported by social workers working in public agencies in Crete, Greece. A hermeneutical phenomenological approach for analysing short written narratives was employed in this study.• Findings: Inadequately resourced services and organizational rules and regulations resulted in a variety of ethically difficult situations. Social workers did not develop activities in order to improve inadequately resourced services and to challenge agency policies; they tried to find solutions within the constraints they encountered.• Applications : Increasing resources and changing organizational conditions that cause ethically difficult situations would contribute to improving social work practice. The role of social work education is important in preparing students to challenge agency practices and deal with ethically difficult situations effectively. The development of support systems for practitioners is necessary in order to promote ethical social work practice; social workers should not be left to deal with ethical difficulties on their own.
Authorized language - the social conditionsof effective ritual discours. This article considers the protests addressed by congregation to its priest after he spoke out about the new liturgy for high communion. In this way, one can analyse the conditions of effective ritual discourse or of that particular form of discourse, the liturgy. The crisis of religious language (liturgy) and of the symbolic effectiveness of this language is a corrolary to the crisis of religious institutions (churches). This double crisis demonstrates a result that is contrary to the Austin types of analysis which search within the language itself in order to explain its "illocutionairy force". This double crisis shows in fact that the symbolic effectiveness of discourse is based upon the effectiveness of the institution by which the discourse was inspired, guaranteed and authorized through the delegation of its authority to the speaker.
The article is dedicated to the analysis of the Ukrainian society social cohesion challenges in the pandemic conditions of digitally mediated interactions. Based on the results of qualitative sociological research, as well as a secondary analysis of the results of other sociological studies and statistics data, the author explores the phenomenon of social cohesion in the unity of three social levels of its presence - macro, meso and micro. The study has shown the dialectical nature of social cohesion and the opposite tendencies of its reproduction at different social levels – inner circle, professional communities and society as a whole. In the macro-social perspective, the pandemic has become a «common challenge», intensifying social consolidation at the level of civil society institutions; on the other hand, it has created a new axis of social inequality, deepening local differences and awareness of the different degree of «protection» from crisis conditions. It is concluded that the digitally mediated everyday interactions, characterized by a lack of social actors' co-presence in space and time, contributes to the spread of systemic integration in those social systems for which it was previously uncharacteristic. This, in turn, leads to the «frozen» functioning of social systems. In contemporary digital age, social actors are increasingly beginning to experience «digital loneliness» due to the loss of coexistence in physical time and space and the weakening of binding social capital, making familiar identification patterns less stable and definite. The «shift» of the concentration of interactions from different social circles to the level of the inner circle – the family one sets a double scenario of its reproduction either as a space of cohesive values, the highest level of trust, participation and social security, or as an environment for everyday conflicts. The article emphasizes the urgency of further conceptualization of a new type of capital – digital, which in conditions of systemic integration of social systems «puts into action» the activation of other types of capital.
The Theory of the Elite in the United States: the Social Conditions Governing Reception and Appropriation. The aim of this article is to analyse the reception given in the US to two works considered to be the original sources of the theory of the elite: the Trattato di sociologia generále by Vilfredo Pareto and the Elementi di scienza politica by Gaetano Mosca. Unlike Italy, where the elitist thesis was appropriated by groups attacking the parliamentary system and demanding a government by force, in the United States. V. Pareto and especially G. Mosca were read not as critics of democracy in general, but rather as realistic thinkers, demystifiers of the classical notion of democracy and as the very basis for a pluralist outlook. The distance separating these viewpoints is what the article seeks to understand.
