Abstract
In this article, I develop a political ecology analysis of Vanuatu's grid electricity policies, with a specific focus on Espiritu Santo Island. I show how the global political economy looms large in shaping the island's energy geographies. Colonial legacies, ideologically conflictive donor aid programmes, multinational corporate legal discords, parliamentary political caprices and the vicissitudes of the local environment all intersect to shape the spatial dynamics of electricity access that raises numerous energy justice concerns. The development of the island's electricity infrastructure is not neutral; rather, it is a socio-technical product of these political economy mediations.

; In the third decade of the nineteenth century Mexico was inaugurating a new form of government and at the same time faced serious difficulties for the international powers to recognize their independence. In that scenario a dispute arose for the appearance in 1824 of La soberanía del Altísimo (The sovereignty of the Most High), text of the bishop of Sonora fray Bernardo del Espíritu Santo, where he attacked the sovereignty of the nation. The printed form was strongly criticized from Mexico City, mainly by Pablo de Villavicencio, José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi and Francisco Santoyo, who through newspapers and pamphlets demanded an exemplary punishment for the seditious bishop. The intention of the article will be to highlight this polemic, in the context of the emergence of public opinion in Mexico.

This study quantifies the amount of water withdrawn from the Luqillo Experimental Forest (LEF) in 2004. Spatially averaged mean monthly water budgets were generated for watersheds draining the LEF by combining long-term data from various government agencies with estimated extraction data. Results suggest that, on a typical day, 70 percent of water generated within the forest is diverted before reaching the ocean. This is up from an estimated 54 percent in 1994. Analysis showed that up to 63 percent of average monthly stream runoff is diverted from individual watersheds during drier months. Watersheds with large water intakes have the most dramatic decrease in streamflow, particularly the Río Espiritu Santo watershed, where 82 percent of median flow is diverted. ; "June 2007." ; Cover title. ; Errata label affixed to cover. ; Includes bibliographical references (p. 23-26) ; This study quantifies the amount of water withdrawn from the Luqillo Experimental Forest (LEF) in 2004.
