In the last thirty years, Cuba and its capital Havana have become homes to one of the most vibrant urban agricultural movements in the world. This article argues that urban agriculture (UA) became the epitome of a broader movement of "agricultural revolution" that followed the collapse of the previous, capital intensive, monocultural agro-export model. It contends that this transformation revolved around three pillars – land redistribution, agricultural diversification, and agroecology – that account for a transition from food security to food sovereignty. It also presents the results of interviews conducted in Havana with urban farmers to assess the impact that UA has on their family's diet and food security. The research demonstrates that UA guarantees a heightened feeling of independence to urban farmers and has a tremendous impact on their food security and diversity, most notably through autoconsumption. It also shows that community needs, use value, and the decommodification of food and land are the driving principles of UA in Cuba, which is in line with the food sovereignty model.

This research focuses on two important issues for the continuity of Indonesia's existence as an agrarian country, namely related to the constitutional basis for the urgency of the policy of establishing a Land Bank in Indonesia and its relevance to legal protection of sustainable food agricultural land. The research method used normative law with a legislative approach that relies on secondary legal material obtained through literature study and analysed using qualitative descriptive methods. The research result are first, the constitutional basis for the urgency of the policy of the establishment of the Land Bank based on and realize the constitutional mandate of Article 33 Paragraph 3 of the 1945 Constitution which states that the earth, water and natural resources contain in it are controlled by the State and used for great prosperity of the people. This means that the common interests of the Indonesian people are greater than those of individual interests. Second, the relevance of the policy of land bank formation which will begin in 2017 with the protection of sustainable food agriculture are, first, it can be seen from the existence of this land bank that support the implementation of spatial planning in Indonesia, and the protection of sustainable food agricultural land is a mandate contained in the spatial law Article 48 of Law Number 26 of 2007 concerning spatial planning (State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia of 2007 Number 68, Supplement to the State Gazette of the Republic of Indonesia Number 4725); second, the function of the land bank as an institution in providing land for the public interest and the existence of sustainable food agricultural land is one variant of public interest whose existence is to create sovereignty, resilience and food independence in Indonesia

Since 2007-08 the global economy has faced two global food price crises, placing the issue of food security firmly back on national and international agendas. In this thought-provoking and persuasively argued book, Jane Harrigan, Professor of Economics at SOAS, examines the impact of the food price hikes on the Arab region and illuminates the linkages between the food price crisis, the Arab Spring, and the growing practice of foreign land acquisition. Both of these dynamics are analysed in depth from a political and an economic perspective, including a detailed study of Saudi Arabia. The Political Economy of Arab Food Sovereignty presents the first comprehensive study of the interplay between food politics and power in the Arab region, making it indispensable reading for all those interested in the political economy of the Arab world and food security.

The article by Peter Andree, Miranda Cobb, Leanne Moussa, and Emily Norgang, "Building Unlikely Alliances Around Food Sovereignty in Canada," is concerned with the efforts of the People's Food Policy Project (PFPP) to influence food policy and to build a counterhegemonic food sovereignty movement. Why may farmers in the Segovias region of Nicaragua resist changing their food production and consumption strategies? This research examines the conceptualization of food sovereignty from the level of international food governance and highlights the disconnects that arise from NGO interventions. I suggest that promoting food sovereignty effectively will require concrete counter development strategies that lead NGOs to transform and democratize how they work.

Tanzania has been experiencing different periods of food shortages mainly because of insufficient food production. While the country has an undisputable potential for food production, the state and its development partners, such as the World Bank, believe that the unsustainable peasant food production is the main cause of the food crisis. As a panacea to the food crisis, a call for de-peasantization in favour of commercial large-scale farming, is advocated. Inspired by the work of Sam Moyo, this article argues that achieving food self-sufficiency should begin with improving peasant agriculture instead of dispossessing peasants of their land. The principles of food sovereignty must be adopted and the orientation of the state must be developmental. The state must play an activist role in investing heavily in agricultural-related projects.
