Austronesian languages have long raised interesting questions for generative theories of syntax and morphology. The papers in this volume encompass some of these traditional questions and place them in newer theoretical contexts. Some of the papers also address new issues which add to our understanding of members of this language family on one side and the nature of linguistic theories on the other. There are three broad issues that re-occur throughout the volume - the role and analysis of verbal morphology, the nature of the subject or the topic in these languages, and the interaction of syntax and specificity. The papers in this volume show that as formal theories become more precise, a wider range of language data can be captured, and as the inventory of language data grows, the accuracy of formal linguistic theories improves

We consider the problem of evaluating in streaming (i.e. in a single left-to-right pass) a nested word transduction with a limited amount of memory. A transduction T is said to be height bounded memory (HBM) if it can be evaluated with a memory that depends only on the size of T and on the height of the input word. We show that it is decidable in coNPTime for a nested word transduction defined by a visibly pushdown transducer (VPT), if it is HBM. In this case, the required amount of memory may depend exponentially on the height of the word. We exhibit a sufficient, decidable condition for a VPT to be evaluated with a memory that depends quadratically on the height of the word. This article deals with changes in the structure of an Indic language in Trinidad. The explanations of the structural changes are sought in the socio‐cultural changes of the East Indian community that have occurred since the East Indians' arrival in Trinidad. It is demonstrated that the socio‐cultural changes in the community have influenced the range of functions of the Indic languages in Trinidad which in turn has determined the directions of structural changes in the language.

Discusses the need, in the literature of international relations, for dialogue between rationalists & constructivists. In this article, Language Game Analysis (LGA) is used to avoid confusion because the current use of constructivism within international relations obscures the roots of the term as it was originally used by Nicholas Onuf. Game theorists (GT) explore the origins & significance of game theory in the rational choice tradition. LGA is used to examine Wittgenstein's notion of a language game. PurposeThis paper aims to argue that Economics is not a neutral science.Design/methodology/approachPost-structuralist perspective of Lyotard (1984), alongside the Pragmatics of Searle (1979) and Travis (1981) are useful for analyzing enunciations in mainstream Economics.FindingsEconomists use illocutionary acts expressed in formal language to achieve perlocutionary effects. Because of the importance attached to objectivity in mainstream Economics, the use of artificial languages is preferred to natural language. However, formal language is preferred regarding its perlocutionary effects on economists' community.Originality/valueThis paper puts together the Continental and the Analytical Philosophy and show, in an original manner, how their intersections and how they can be useful to better understand the epistemology of Economics.

This research has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant number 666363. ; Where full static analysis of systems fails to scale up due to system size, dynamic monitoring has been increasingly used to ensure system correctness. The downside is, however, runtime overheads which are induced by the additional monitoring code instrumented. To address this issue, various approaches have been proposed in the literature to use static analysis in order to reduce monitoring overhead. In this paper we generalise existing work which uses control-flow static analysis to optimise properties specified as automata, and prove how similar analysis can be applied to more expressive symbolic automata - enabling reduction of monitoring instrumentation in the system, and also monitoring logic. We also present empirical evidence of the effectiveness of this approach through an analysis of the effect of monitoring overheads in a financial transaction system. ; peer-reviewed
