A multi-disciplinary critical analysis of Greek-Cypriot historical plays, of the 1878-2004 period, as indicators of collective identity trends in Cyprus, at the time of their production. Through Political Theory, History/Historiography and Theatre Studies, the study explores identity in modernity at a time when the formation of a national identity was the major sociopolitical development. It also takes into account the dramatic production of communities in continental Europe, Greece, Malta and Crete, as well as the corresponding literary and aesthetic movements. Furthermore, through the structuralist textual analysis of Roland Barthes, the figure of the hero/heroine is central in the examination of the texts. Drawing, also, on intertextuality and its mechanisms, it is revealed that hte plays protagonists with their actions and inter-connections, are indications of the identity the author is associating with the community. The focus is on plays whose themes emerge from three distinct historical periods and deal with specific historical personae: Antiquity; the Axiothea/Nikokles plays; Byzantium; the Justinian/Theodora/Belisarius plays; and French Medieval Colonization; the Peter I Lusignan plays. A comparative analysis of the plays, within and between each thematic category, exposes two ideological frameworks: on the one hand, the over-arching presence of Helleno-centric nationalism on the island and the construction of an imagined community and on the other the importance of the colonial legacy in Greek-Cypriot ideological discourses, in parallel to other communities around the Mediterranean.
This book examines the development of ancient Greek civilization through a path-breaking application of social scientific theories. David B. Small charts the rise of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations and the unique characteristics of the later classical Greeks through the lens of ancient social structure and complexity theory, opening up new ideas and perspectives on these societies. He argues that Minoan and Mycenaean institutions evolved from elaborate feasting, and that the genesis of Greek colonization was born from structural chaos in the eighth century. Small isolates distinctions between Iron Age Crete and the rest of the Greek world, focusing on important differences in social structure. His book differs from others on Ancient Greece, highlighting the perpetuation of classical Greek social structure into the middle years of the Roman Empire, and concluding with a comparison of the social structure of classical Greece to that of the classical Maya civilization.

; By re-analyzing two well-known inscriptions from Halicarnassus, Syll.3 45 and Syll.3 46, we focus, firstly, on the territorial and political relationships between Halicarnassus and the neighbouring community of Salmacis throughout the v cent. B.C. Secondly, with the anthroponymic and toponymic data as a starting point, we introduce some precisions regarding the Greco-Carian mixed character of the population of both centres and the history of the Greek presence in the region.
; The article is dedicated to the Greek colonization of the North-Western part of the Crimea. A number of rather important and disputable questions is being thoroughly analyzed: the date of foundation of Chersonesus, the interpretation of the settlement on the peninsula of Maiachni, attribution and dating of curled up burials of the Chersonesus necropolis, the participation of Olbia in the colonization of the North-West of the Crimea, political inter-relations of Scythians of Chersonesus and Kerkinitide. A wide use of initial records, historiography of the end of the XIX – beginning of the XX c. And of the newest one, and also a critical approach to the traditional points of view makes the work extremely interesting and topical.
International audience ; Cremated soldiers' bones in urns found at the burial ground next to the ancient harbor in Paroikia, at Paros Island, in two monumental cist graves, offer evidence of a forgotten battle fought around 730 B.C. What sort of society did the late eighth and early seventh-century inhabitants of Paros and contemporary Greek cities have? The soldiers' burials in Paroikia offer some clues.
Mykolaiv city is located in the south of Ukraine and is the center of Mykolaiv Oblast. It has been considered as the «city of shipbuilders» for a long time. Yes, when the city was founded at the Empire days (in 1789), glory of the shipbuilding center on the Black Sea was entrenched. At the Soviet Union times this fame only increased.Taking into account the realities of today's foreign policy of Ukraine, namely the implementation of the European Union Association Agreement, the problem of European influences in the Mykolaiv region is important. In developing these problems, the author concluded that the various influences of European civilization occurred in several ways:Firstly, Greek colonization began in the second half of VII century B. C., when the settlement was based on Berezan (Borisfen). Its remains have survived and now. In 647–646 years B. C. natives of Miletus founded Olbia. Its political and economic center was a city on the right bank of the Bug Estuary near the village Parutine, Ochakiv Raion of Mykolaiv Oblast.Secondly, the German colonization began in the second half of the XVIII century. At the end of the XIX century there already were several dozen colonies in Mykolaiv. Germans settled in the territory of Berezanka Raion, Veselynove Raion, Mykolaivsky Raion, Novyi Buh Raion and others. The largest German colonies were: Rashtadti – Poricha, Rohrbach – Novosvitlivka, Katerinental – Katerynivka, Landau – Shyrokolanivka, Waterloo – Stavky, Oleksanrfeld – Oleksandrivka. One of the most famous German colonists in Mykolaiv was a prominent astronomer Karl Knorre, founder and first director of the Naval Observatory.Thirdly, Polish colonization left a lot of controversial issues in the history of Ukraine and such architectural monuments in our city as Roman Catholic Church. A striking example of Poles and Jews settlements in Mykolaiv is Pervomaisk, which was founded at the intersection of three state boundaries in place of the towns: the former Orlik – Ukrainian Cossack fortification, later renamed in Olviopol, former Polish fortification Bohopol and the Turkish Khan suburb Gault. After the Cossack era Poles traveled to Ukraine from Duchy of Warsaw in the time of Napoleon. In 1814 only «Warsaw settlers» were about 8 thousand people.Fourthly, there was actively cooperation with the European capital, including the activities of the Belgian community in Brussels on building on the bank of Bug Estuary shipbuilding, mechanical and casting plant. In 1897 it began working under the name «Anonymous community of shipbuilding, mechanical and casting plants in Mykolaiv» (shortly – «Naval»), unofficially it was called the French plant. Thus, South Ukraine, and Mykolayivschyna with its center particularly, played a special role in the economic and political integration of Ukrainian lands. Thanks to favorable conditions this region for a long time was considered as generous and convenient for settlements. It was possible to become rich easily and quickly that attracted many people. In different historical periods colonization of Mykolayiv region was characterized by different intensity and formation of many European and Eastern colonies. History of this land proves that the process of colonization was both voluntary (Greek, Polish, German colony) and forced (these lands were distributed to landowners entities by the Russian Empire). The colonization of Ukrainian lands in different cultures and civilizations had many consequences and not all of them were positive. On the one hand, it gave impetus to the economic development of Mykolaiv and region, especially in rural areas. There were a familiarity cultures and sharing skills, colonization architectural monuments have remained until now, etc. On the other hand, the policy of colonization by the Poles, for example, strengthened Polonizing Ukrainian population, especially for wealthy nobility. Polish culture, language and school were implemented. These facts of the history of Mykolaiv prove that our region from the Olbia and «Wild Garden» establishment, that indicates the long history of Mykolaiv region and until today was always inhabited and developed. Development of the national culture and perception of various influences of Eastern and Western civilizations were typical.
The article has studied and systematized a set of major scientific papers on the ethnic history of the Greeks in Odessa, has identified and argued the stages of development of the historiographical tradition of the problem, has conducted the comparative analysis of directions and priorities of research on the Greeks in Odessa and has traced their evolution in accordance with changes in socio-political context. Historiographical work on the problem has been classified by chronological criteria. It is noted that during the imperial era, research did not go beyond clarifying certain issues of resettlement in the context of the colonization policy of the Russian government. In the research of Soviet historians in the general history of colonization by the Greeks of Odessa, military colonization stands out. At the same time, the socio-economic aspects of the functioning of the Greek community deserved special attention of Soviet historiography. The expansion of the range of research, inclusion of issues of commercial and social activities of Greeks occurs at the present stage of studying the problem and is connected with the intensification of Greek studies in Ukraine. It is proved that the lack of legal autonomy of the Odessa Greek community, the mobility of its representatives did not contribute to the scientific awareness of the Greeks in Odessa (unlike in Nizhyn and Azov) as a separate community with a whole set of distinctive features. Therefore, their history was considered within the context of the history of the foundation and development of the city. Despite the recent appearance of interesting articles on charitable, trade, commercial, cultural and educational activities of the Greek community of Odessa, it is still waiting for an ordered and comprehensive study.

International audience ; The nature of social, political, religious and cultural relationships that existed between a colony and its mother-city in the Ancient Greek world is one of the greatest issues of the History and Archaeology of Greek colonization. This paper tries to give new elements of answer to this question by analysing the necropolis and funerary practices of the Sicilian colony of Megara Hyblaea and that of its mother-city, Mégara Nisaea. Taking advantage of recent studies and new data, it discusses the validity of the conclusions drawn on this very subject by a first study published twenty years ago. The many similarities of the funerary practices of the two Megarian cities are underlined, whereas the specific evolutions of the funerary practices of the colony are replaced in the larger frame of a comparison with other Sicilian colonies, particularly the neighbouring colony of Syracuse. It shows that both the mother-city and the colonial environment are certainly at play in the formation of new funerary customs in Megara Hyblaea. The economic or/and ideological dimensions of these evolutions are finally discussed.
Since Antiquity, when the Greek colonization of Pontus Euxinus started in the 7th century BC, the Black Sea area was the scene of diverse human activities, among which the most important was the trading navigation. Most of the colonies and settlements founded by the ancient Greek colonists comming from Megara, Milet, Corinth or Heraclea Pontica were located along the coast and were connected to each other and also to the metropolis of origin mainly by nautical trade routes running along the shores. Over millennia, the navigation along Black Sea maritime routes has intensified and diversified, many military confrontations have also taken place, all these leading to the accumulation on the seabed of numerous shipwrecks. Although the history of navigation and its associated activities along the western coast of the Black Sea is over 25 centuries old, paradoxically, the number of shipwrecks discovered until now, especially from the ancient and medieval periods, is unnaturally low. However, if such discoveries have been made in the Bulgarian coastal waters at Kitten (e.g. Batchvarov, 2014) and Ropotamo (e.g. Pachero-Ruiz et al., 2018, Sturt et al., 2018), in Bulgarian deep waters (see the fabulous results of Black Sea Maritime Archaeology Project, 2017-2018), in Ukrainean and Turkish waters at Chersonesos (Brennan et al., 2011) and respectively off Sinop Peninsula (Piechota et al., 2010, Brennan et al., 2011, Sahin et al., 2016), until recently such information regarding findings of interest for the submerged cultural heritage (e.g. Scarlat, 1973; 1975, Munteanu & Vochițu, 2009, Atanasiu-Croitoru, 2015) made in Romanian waters were very few and only published in Romanian. Recent findings of researches carried out during the few last years (e.g. Caraivan et al., 2015, Pflederer et al., 2016, Dimitriu et al., 2018), as well as synthesis (e.g. Custurea et al., 2007, Munteanu, 2016, Dobre, 2016, Dimitriu et al., 2019), of the archaeological discoveries made over the last decades in the coastal waters provide ...
