This study examines the impact of trade liberalisation on the industrial productivity for a panel of twenty seven 3-digit manufacturing industries in Pakistan over the period 1980-2006. Using a variant of the Cobb-Douglas production function for industrial sector, we estimated output elasticities. The results show positive output elasticities with respect to labour, capital and raw materials for the pre-trade liberalisation period (1981 –1995) as well as post-trade liberalisation period (1996-2006). For the pre-liberalisation period, we observe positive output elasticity with respect to energy, while it turns out to be negative in the post-liberalisation period probably due to energy crisis in Pakistan. In the second stage, we calculate total factor productivity (TFP) and examine the impact of trade liberalisation on TFP for pre-and post-trade liberalisation periods. The results reveal that trade liberalisation proxied by import duty has positive but negligible impact on the TFP in the pre-as well as post-liberalisation periods. On the other hand, effective rates of protection exert large negative impact on the TFP in the post-liberalisation than the pre-liberalisation period. This paper presents some results derived from a wider National Institute study of labour productivity differentials in non-service activities in the British, American and German economies, to be published as a NIESR Occasional Paper during the autumn 1982. For the most part the present paper focuses on the international labour productivity differentials which emerge at the major sector level—for agriculture, extractive industries, manufacturing, construction, public utilities and transport. The complete study will also consider productivity differentials for component activities in these sectors and seek some explanation of contrasts in international industrial performance in terms of such factors as capital intensity, market size, rates of growth, labour force quality etc.

This study presents empirical evidence on the effects of incentives on industrial productivity in China's food industry. Data covering the 1990‐1996 period were collected from 30 food enterprises in Guangdong Province. The empirical results support the use of bonus schemes to motivate enterprises to achieve higher levels of productivity. Moreover, the study indicates an important variable affecting productivity: the proportion of temporary workers in the total labour force. It was found that flexibility in the use of temporary workers could produce a positive effect on enterprise productivity. This finding strongly supports the need for flexibility in employment policies. When compared to state‐owned and collective‐owned enterprises, their counterparts, e.g. foreign ventures and joint‐stock enterprises, were relatively more efficient in production.

Effect of exchange rate volatility on industrial productivity has been a controversial debate among academia and experts. This study examines effect of exchange rate volatility on industrial productivity, many studies have mixed results on the direction of exchange rate volatility and the scope of the thesis covers 35years 1981 2015 , the pre and post Structural Adjustment Programme while primary and secondary data gathered from the Nigeria industrial sector by questionnaire and time series obtained from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, 2014 2016 were used. The data were estimated using descriptive statistical methods chi square and mean scores and Phillip Perron and Augmented Dickey Fuller used to determine the unit roots and non stationarity among the variables. ARDL and Bound test was applied to determine short and long run co integration among independent and dependent variables. Diagnostic and Normality test applied to test for stability. The F statistics is 159.3 and the R squared is 99.7 shown that variables are jointly significant and model a good fit. The Durbin Watson of 3.04 showed no serial correlation. The results shown that foreign exchange rate has a positive relationship with industrial performance, however, the exchange rate volatility crumbled industrial production as machinery and raw materials are imported for the industry productions, while bank lending rates, FDT, Inflation and PCI have negative coefficient. The ADRL and Bound test revealed a long run relationship among the variables at 5 significance level. The government should pursue currency appreciation as exporter of mono product and encourages non oil exports and discourage Nigerian cosmopolitan pattern of consumptions. This study employs a Stochastic Frontier Analysis to decompose Total Factor Productivity for the manufacturing corridor of Indonesia. Technological progress, technical efficiency change, and scale effects are captured at a firm level covering all Java provinces from 2007 to 2013. The period is of particular interest as it covers the efforts of re-industrialization under the Master Plan for Acceleration of Indonesian Economy (MP3EI) and the sharp increase-decrease in global demand and global prices. The study captures sources of productivity growth supporting/deterring output growth, differentiating across firm characteristics based on size (large and medium), technology intensity, skill intensity, location (province), and capital-output ratio employed in production. As firms differ in the five elements, productivity and efficiency performance also differ. This paper questions whether productivity growth is limited to conventional sources -input growth and technological progress-, or if manufacturing is managing some gains through non-conventional channels -technical efficiency and scale effects. The paper also questions the presence of patterns in productivity among group firms (characteristics), finding that firms which combine a low-tech level, a higher skill ratio, and are medium in scale reported TFP at least 70 % higher than the average firm. Combinations of firm size, technology, skills, and ratio output affect the performance. Cost analysis of factors of production is also carried out, finding that energy is canceling out possible gains in scale effects by rising disproportionately both in consumption and prices. TFP growth was found to be negative and falling, raising the possibility of a path towards de-industrialization.

It is a fact that public expenditure has a strong association with industrial productivity. The industrial sector recorded slow growth of 5.43%, which adds 20.90% to the GDP of Pakistan (2017-2018). This study aims to find the effects of public expenditure on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) in the industrial sector of the country. The study constructed two different models. In the first model, the study used time series data from 1975 to 2018, and the growth of adjusted TFP was calculated by the growth accounting method. In the second model, the study collected data from 1977 to 2018 and checked the impact of government expenditure on the TFP growth in the industry. The unit root tests, Ordinary Least Square (OLS), and Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) were employed. The findings of the study revealed that public expenditures on education were significant and positively related to TFP growth in industries. Public expenditure on health, agriculture, and inflation had a significant and positive association with TFP growth in the industries. Foreign direct investment had a negative but significant impact on TFP growth. The results of the present study suggest that industrial productivity can be increased by increasing the expenditure on education and health.

The article attempts to measure the change in productivity in Indonesia's industrial sectors since the mid-1980s and to examine the impact of the import liberalization and FDI (foreign direct investment) policies on such productivity change. It is shown that the growth of the manufacturing sectors after 1985 has accompanied the improvement in total factory productivity (TFP), though this has not been dramatically successful. (DÜI-Sen)
