AbstractTraining of social workers according to the changing needs of the society is important. To this end, we decided to review the adequacy of mental health training in postgraduate programme in social work. The Mental Health Care Act defines psychiatric social worker (PSW) in India to have additional higher qualification beyond post‐graduation in social work. The number of such qualified PSWs appears to be limited due to small number of institutes that offer advanced training in the country. Though, the number of available PSWs with such qualifications is rising, the manpower in proportion to the mental health needs in the country continues to remain low. It is therefore, relevant to review the quality of psychiatric social work education at postgraduate level if this level is to be considered as the desirable qualification for PSW. In this context, postgraduate social work syllabi from 71 universities including autonomous institutions were reviewed using semi‐structured assessment. The results show a lack of uniform teaching components, training methods and insufficient skill orientation towards mental health interventions. These observations suggest that curricula and training are modified with strengthening and enhancing the quality of training of mental health at post‐graduate level in Social Work.

In this paper, I provide an argument for the assumption that contents
supervene on vehicles, which is based on the explanatory role of
representations in the cognitive sciences. I then show that the
supervenience thesis together with the explanatory role imply that the
individuation criteria for contents and vehicles are tightly bound together,
such that content internalism (externalism) is in effect equivalent to
vehicle internalism (externalism). In the remainder of the paper, I argue
that some of the different positions in the debate stem from different
research questions, namely the question about the acquisition conditions and
the question about the entertaining conditions for mental representation.
Finally, I argue that the thesis of externalism is much more interesting if
understood as a claim about how mental representation works in our world as
opposed to how they work in all metaphysically possible worlds. In
particular, I argue that this ?nomological? understanding of the thesis is
able to explain how and why the experimental methods used in contemporary
cognitive sciences are able to provide insight into behavior generation.

BackgroundNational guidelines are being produced at an increasing rate, and politicians and managers are expected to promote these guidelines and their implementation in clinical work. However, research seldom deals with how decision-makers can perceive these guidelines or their challenges in a cultural context. Therefore, the aim of this study was twofold: to investigate how well Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) reflected the empirical reality of mental healthcare and to gain an extended understanding of the perceptions of decision-makers operating within this context, in regard to the implementation of evidence-based guidelines.MethodsThe study took place in the southeast of Sweden and employed a qualitative design. The data were collected through 23 interviews with politicians and managers working either in the county council or in the municipalities. The transcribed text was analysed iteratively and in two distinct phases, first deductively and second inductively by means of qualitative content analysis.ResultsOur deductive analysis showed that the text strongly reflected two out of three categorisation matrices, i.e. evidence and context representing the PARIHS framework. However, the key element of facilitation was poorly mirrored in the text. Results from the inductive analysis can be seen in light of the main category sitting on the fence; thus, the informants' perceptions reflected ambivalence and contradiction. This was illustrated by conflicting views and differences in culture and ideology, a feeling of security in tradition, a certain amount of resistance to change and a lack of role clarity and clear directions. Together, our two analyses provide a rich description of an organisational culture that is highly unlikely to facilitate the implementation of the national guidelines, together with a distrust of the source behind such guidelines, which stands in stark contrast to the high confidence in the knowledge of experienced people in authority within the ...

AbstractThe contents and characteristics of mental imagery (MI) have been investigated with respect to a few mental disorders, but not yet in healthy samples. In adults, it was found that characteristics like the vividness and perspective of MI might be associated with emotions and emotional distress, a matter which needs to be examined in youths. A sample of 80 adolescents (14–20 years; 75.3% female) completed a web-based quasi-experimental design about the contents, and characteristics (frequency, vividness, perspective, controllability) of spontaneous positive and negative MI and emotional distress and emotions, as well as the Beck Depression Inventory and the Social Phobia Inventory. Adolescents described mental images primarily about social themes and those participants experiencing images about social conflicts reported higher levels of emotional distress. Participants reported perceiving images in a combination of field- and observer perspective also stated a higher score of anxiety. A higher frequency, vividness and less control over negative images were significantly linked to a higher intensity of emotional distress and anxiety. A higher frequency, vividness and a higher level of control over positive images were significantly linked to a higher intensity of joy. Small sample size and high social status of participants limits generalizability. Findings indicate that encouraging young people to create vivid positive images and to use a training to increase control over MI might be useful to increase mental health. The results do not permit causal conclusions to be drawn, but raise questions about previous studies comparing each imagery perspective individually.

Abstract Background Population level data regarding the general mental health status, and the socio-demographic factors associated with the mental health status of adolescents in Australia aged 12–16 years is limited. This study assessed prevalence of mental health problems in a regional population of Australian students in Grades 7–10, and investigated associations between mental health problems and socio-demographic factors. Methods A web-based survey was conducted in 21 secondary schools located in disadvantaged local government areas in one regional local health district of NSW Australia. Mental health problems were measured using the youth self-report Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) total SDQ score and three subscale scores (internalising problems, externalising problems and prosocial behaviour). Associations between each SDQ outcome and student socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Status, remoteness of residential location and socio-economic disadvantage) were investigated. Results Data are reported for 6793 students aged 12–16 years. Nineteen percent of participants scored in the 'very high' range for the total SDQ, 18.0 % for internalising problems, 11.3 % for externalising problems and 8.9 % for prosocial behaviour problems. Gender and Aboriginal status were associated with all four SDQ outcomes, while age was associated with two, excluding externalising problems and prosocial behaviour. Aboriginal adolescents scored higher for mental health problems than non-Aboriginal adolescents for all four SDQ outcomes. Females scored higher than males for total SDQ and internalising problems, with mean difference greatest at age 15. Males scored higher for externalising problems and lower for prosocial behaviour than females. Conclusions The finding that mental health problems significantly varied by age, gender and Aboriginality may suggest a need for tailored interventions for groups of adolescents with highest levels of mental health problems.
