Older Women: Health and Political Behavior
In: Women & politics, Band 12, Heft 4, S. 87-108
ISSN: 0195-7732
Data from the 1987 General Social Survey are drawn on to explore the influence of health status on the political behavior of 268 US women ages 55+, compared to 174 men. Results indicate that health status has modest effects on both sexes. Better health directly affects greater political participation among older women, though it has only an indirect effect on older males' political activism. Electoral implications of these findings are discussed. 3 Tables, 2 Figures, 57 References. Adapted from the source document.
Roles, Feminist Attitudes and Older Women
In: Women & politics, Band 5, Heft 1, S. 5-22
ISSN: 0195-7732
Womens' views of each other & their roles over time & by age are explored with data from the Kirkpatrick Feminism Scale, which was administered to 107 mother-daughter pairs in 1934 & 1974, & to 141 Rs whose mean age was 70 in 1977. Findings reveal that the modern women's liberation movement has little impact on the life of the older woman, because many of the current issues, eg, abortion, are no longer relevant to her life. In cases where she has become more feminist, it is more attributable to "having lived through 40 or more years of social changes" affecting women than particular issues associated with the liberation movement. Although future generations of older women may be more feminist, significant attitudinal change will occur slowly. The effort to deal with the undesirable dualism that exists in the public/private domains of women's lives or the liberal/radical aspects of the feminist movement requires that the contingency-inconsistency view of lives throughout generations be used with the historical view of women, & that ageism & sexism must be taken into account. Myths about women are examined in an important segment of contemporary feminist writings. Analyses of classical oral myths, of literary myths, and of images of women in the press, radio, and television contribute to our understanding of the construction of male/female stereotypes in our society. This paper analyses a series of cartoons in Playboy magazine which focus on a 'dirty old woman.'

Great second acts: in praise of older women
Antony said of Cleopatra, "age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety." Shakespeare's sentiment can be applied to the amazing women in Marlene Wagman-Gerrer's Second Acts: In Praise of Older Women who refused to be defined by the dates on their birth certificates. Their lives serve as testimony that one can be feisty after fifty and to those who think otherwise, in the words of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, "I dissent." Discover how chef Julia Child changed the way America ate, what inspired Mother Teresa to serve, and how Rita Moreno transformed from penniless immigrant to queen of the silver screen"--Back cover
