The aim of the study was to identify attitudes towards places commonly associated with the communist period of the Polish People's Republic (PPR), and to investigate the role of the relationship between these attitudes and place attachment, interest in a city's history and political orientation. This online study used a convenience sample of residents of the cities of Warsaw, Toruń and Poznań, N = 199. The exploratory factor analysis revealed that attitudes towards PPR places fall into two groups: those for the preservation of PPR places, and those for their removal. Moreover, this distinction was associated with, on the one hand, the preservation of ideologically free places (IFPs) such as cafes, milky bars, cinemas, and places that serve cultural functions. On the other, it was associated with the removal of ideologically contaminated places (ICPs) such as, e.g., monuments or street names reminiscent of awkward historical and political events. The inclination to remove ICPs was not related to place attachment but was positively related to interest in a city's history; willingness to preserve IFPs, on the other hand, was correlated with higher traditional and active place attachment and with higher interest in a city's history. Interest in a city's history played a significant mediating role in this relationship. On a more general level, right-wing preferences coincided with being in favor of removing ICPs. This article introduces performativity and processes of place-making into discussions about middle-class residents' place attachments. It draws on interviews with middle-class residents in two different London neighbourhoods, Peckham (inner urban, socially mixed) and West Horsley and Effingham (commuter belt villages), to argue that (1) the practice of place is key to understanding middle-class claims to belonging; and (2) ways of 'doing' neighbourhood must be understood within the context of other circulating representations. While respondents in Peckham work with or against prevailing discourses about their neighbourhood as they perform place, in the commuter belt, residents strive to uphold the image of their village as the rural idyll, a classed and racialised vision. The contrast between the inner city and commuter belt reveals the different performative registers through which place is practised; while in Peckham middle-class residents invest in processes of place-making, respondents in the commuter belt engage instead in active processes of place maintenance.

Products and commodities take on the qualities of the places from which they come. In their tendency to persist even in the context of geographically homogenizing forces, place differences permeate the artifacts whose creation they stimulate. Through an investigation of industrial design practice, I specify how factors like client referral systems, local art worlds, and the existence of prior physical infrastructure influence the substance of stuff. I also examine processes like migrants' cultural self–selection, the formation of internal markets, and the nature of the local semiotic. The mechanisms through which such diverse elements combine into a local industrial atmosphere shape not just competitive advantage of one place over another in producing a given artifact, but the nature of goods that can come into existence.Les produits et marchandises revêtent les propriétés de leurs lieux d'origine. Tendant à subsister en dépit des forces d'homogénéisation géographique, les différences entre les lieux imprègnent les objets dont elles stimulent la création. A partir d'une étude sur les pratiques en conception industrielle, l'article établit la façon dont les systèmes de référence des clients, les univers artistiques locaux et l'existence d'une infrastructure matérielle antérieure influent sur l'essence même des choses. Certains processus sont détaillés comme l'auto–sélection culturelle des migrants, la formation de marchés internes et la nature de la sémiotique locale. Les mécanismes qui permettent la combinaison de ces divers éléments en une 'ambiance' industrielle locale façonnent non seulement des atouts pour la concurrence entre tel et tel lieux grâce à la production d'un objet spécifique, mais aussi la nature des produits qui peuvent voir le jour.

La place publique, centrale dans l'espace urbain, est le lieu où naissent le rassemblement et la protestation, et c'est aussi l'endroit où se révèle le revers de la ville, ses populations de chômeurs, de déclassés, désœuvrés volontaires, de visiteurs et riverains. Une « coupe » verticale dans cet espace, à Oran, seconde ville d'Algérie, donne à voir une architecture, des mentalités, mais aussi des contradictions, des personnages hors du portrait type du militant algérien. Une ville qui, parce qu'elle n'est pas la capitale, révèle mieux le pays profond. Celui qui fut la force du soulèvement du 22 février 2019.
