Sustainable risk management
In: Strategies for sustainability
"Here, expert authors delineate approaches that can support both decision makers as well as their concerned populations in overcoming unwarranted fears and in elaborating policies based on scientific evidence. Four exemplary focus areas were chosen for in-depth review, namely:- The scientific basis of risk management- Risk management in the area of environmental and ecological policy- Risk management in radiation medicine- Risk management in context with digitalization and robotics. General as well as specific recommendations are summarized in a memorandum. Fundamental thoughts on the topic are presented in the introductory part of the book. The idea for and contents of the book were developed at a workshop on "Sustainable Risk Management: How to manage risks in a sensible and responsible manner?" held in Feldafing at Lake Starnberg (Germany) on April 14 to 16, 2016. The book offers important information and advice for scientists, entrepreneurs, administrators and politicians."--

Discussions of technological risks and their management by corporations and society are ubiquitous and often acrimonious. Equally ubiquitous are several important misconceptions of key risk questions. This paper (i) argues that serious epistemological confusion pervades much of the scientific basis for risk assessment, especially confusion among objective, subjective, and perceived risk, and between facts and ethical values; and (ii) asserts that this confusion combines with psychological aspects of risk perception to produce a confused risk debate, a societal management of risks often based on diffuse or contradictory objectives, and consequently mismanagement of resource allocation to risk reduction.
Knowledge Management & Risk Management
International audience ; Knowledge Management methods, techniques and experience can bring a considerable help in preventing all kind of risks. The current economic context amplified the existing risks and introduced new ones such as environmental, political and social. Among the most critical risks of this century is this of lost of knowledge and "memory" in particular in industry involved in long-term activities. After listing the principal risks and recalling of main approaches and techniques of Knowledge Management and its application for risk management an example of nuclear industry is given. Discussion follows in final conclusion and some perspectives are presented.
