SummaryThe recognition of which girls are at risk of becoming pregnant before the age of 16 years is of interest to legal, educational, social and medical services. In this paper a large amount of data, available for a total population of schoolgirls, has been used to show that prediction is indeed possible. It was found that compared to a group of girls matched on a number of sociodemographic characteristics, those who became pregnant during adolescence were more likely to have been academic underachievers at age 11, to have made an appearance in a juvenile court, and to have been referred to a child guidance or psychiatric clinic at an early age. Difficulties over matching also suggest that they are more likely to have five or more siblings, to be illegitimate and to have mothers who were themselves teenagers at the time of their daughter's birth.
Reducing the United States Air Force (USAF)'s fuel use is a major budgetary concern, as the USAF consumes more fuel than the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and all other Department of Defense (DoD) agencies combined. This research focused on fuel efficiency of C-130 Hercules Aircraft Commanders (ACs) by proposing, constructing, and testing a survey measure of behavioral drivers of discretionary pro-environmental professional behaviors among USAF pilots.

Provides a historical perspective to the debate on "net neutrality," ie, that the Internet & physical access to it ought to be universally available on uniform & nondiscriminatory terms. Here, it is argued that net neutrality is really the resurrection of the problematic notion of the "common carrier," which if implemented would likely harm those it sought to protect while advancing the interests of politically powerful economic elites.

Abstract. Ellipsis is subject to both syntactic and discourse conditions. Here we explore the discourse condition that favors antecedents that are part of the main assertion of an utterance. We argue that the main assertion tendency is best captured in the processor, not the grammar. Two experiments test verb‐phrase ellipsis examples with antecedents in a conditional. One suggests that, because of the main assertion tendency, a reader considers full conditional antecedents and not just verb‐phrase antecedents. However, when the antecedent of the conditional expresses already‐given information and essentially becomes redundant, fewer full conditional antecedents are chosen for the verb‐phrase ellipsis, as if the consequent clause has become the assertion of the conditional sentence with theif‐clause essentially canceling out. The second experiment explores examples where a modal is added inside theif‐clause, rendering the conditional counterfactual. As in other examples of flawed or imperfect ellipsis, the nonactuality entailment/implicature improves the acceptability of such examples.

The purpose of this study was to explore the antecedents of family conflict in Uganda. A qualitative approach was used in this study. A sample size of 139 participants provided data which was subjected to content analysis. Results revealed that the core themes associated with family conflict are finances and priority of resources. Further findings show that differences in tastes and interests, selfishness and lack of communication played a key role as causes of family conflicts. The implication of this study is that finances and priority of resources are antecedents of family conflict in the context of Uganda. Therefore, the antecedents of family conflict that emerged from this study can be understood, defined and analyzed through the lens of social identity theory. Future research may include conducting quantitative studies with a particular demographic using the themes that have emerged from this study.

A model of the antecedents (personal-demographic, organizational relationship, and person-organization fit) of organizational commitment was empirically analyzed. The study used a sample of employees (N = 406) from a wide variety of organizations to test the hypotheses. The results of the multiple regression analysis supported the hypothesized relationships and the proposed model on the antecedents to organizational commitment. In particular, this study uncovered heretofore unknown implications that attributional processes such as locus of control have on organizational commitment as well as supporting previous research on the impact of demographics and leader behavior. Overall, the antecedent model, tested empirically, has important practical implications for predicting employees' organizational commitment.

A study of daily newspaper plagiarism over a ten-year period reveals the offense results from a combination of individual and systemic causes. An association between how the misdeed is termed and what sanction is applied, combined with evidence of a marked increase in disclosure and firings after the 2003 Jayson Blair case, reveals that plagiarism is situationally defined. Four types of plagiarism are identified, linked to three antecedents: rationalizing dishonesty, problematic techniques, and definitional ambiguity. Most plagiarism arises from professional routines that minimize attribution, yet is treated relatively harshly because it exposes a paradigmatic pretense of journalistic originality.
