'Play art' or interactive art is becoming a central concept in the contemporary art world, disrupting the traditional role of passive observance usually assumed by audiences, allowing them active participation. The work of 'play' artists - from Carsten Höller's 'Test Site' at the Tate Modern to Gabriel Orozco's 'Ping Pond Table' - must be touched, influenced and experienced; the gallery-goer is no longer a spectator but a co-creator. Time to Play explores the role of play as a central but neglected concept in aesthetics and a model for ground-breaking modern and postmodern experiments which have tended to blur the boundary between art and life. Moving freely between disciplines, Katarzyna Zimna links the theory and history of 20th and 21st century art with ideas developed within play, game and leisure studies, and the philosophical theories of Kant, Gadamer and Derrida, to critically engage with current discussion on the role of the artist, viewers, curators and their spaces of encounter

Nightingale conceived of the art of nursing as the ability of the nurse to positively influence a patient's environment to foster healing. By this definition, the art of nursing is at risk. Rather than impacting their circumstances, nurses are being overwhelmed by them. The challenges faced by nurses currently have many parallels with historical examples of Nightingale's work. In this article, examples of modern nursing workforce challenges are contrasted with situations faced by Nightingale. Like Nightingale, modern nurses are being required to justify their worth in order to receive funding and renumeration for their work. Nursing work is being devalued, which is reflected in nursing education policy and changes to professional structures. In the midst of these difficulties, nurses can take inspiration from Nightingale as a political advocate and activist. Modern nurses face a call to action, to defend the professional nature of nursing and regain their political influence. Specific strategies for political action are discussed and nurses are urged to engage politically in order to regain control of their environment and the art of nursing.

Arts educators have adopted social justice themes as part of a larger vision of transforming society. Social justice arts education confronts oppression and inequality arising from factors related to race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, class, ability, gender, and sexuality. This edition of Common Threads investigates the intersection of social justice work with education in the visual arts, music, theatre, dance, and literature. Weaving together resources from a range of University of Illinois Press journals, the editors offer articles on the scholarly inquiry, theory, and practice of social justice arts education. Selections from the past three decades reflect the synergy of the diverse scholars, educators, and artists actively engaged in such projects. Together, the contributors bring awareness to the importance of critically reflective and inclusive pedagogy in arts educational contexts. They also provide pedagogical theory and practical tools for building a social justice orientation through the arts.
