Explores and analyses the Abbasid Caliphate as it was re-imagined in late medieval CairoPresents different types of source material – jurisprudential, historiographical and documentary – which speak about topics in turn, resulting in a highly nuanced image of the Abbasid Caliphate of CairoIncludes multiple passages of previously unpublished material in translation including biographical literature, investiture documents and epigraphical evidenceExplores a variety of textual dimensions of the Abbasid Caliphate of Cairo based on narrative, prescriptive and documentary sourcesMustafa Banister presents a thorough investigation of a forgotten dynasty: the Cairene descendants of the Abbasid family. He uncovers the public and private lives of the 18 men invested as caliphs during the period of 'Mamluk' rule in Egypt and Syria (1250–1517) and reveals a nuanced understanding of the Abbasid Caliphate according to elite members of Syro-Egyptian society. In doing so, he addresses the function of the caliph and his office amidst the breakdown and recreation of each new socio-political order of the sultanate.Banister examines the uniquely Cairene context of the idea and institution of the caliphate, including how it was socially and textually performed in the late medieval sultanate of Cairo

This volume analyzes cases from emerging economies in relation to the global endeavor to promote the vision of sustainable development in all forms of education. It aims to discuss the significance of hearing local voices and understanding local discourse regarding strategies for action for change, and the role of educational systems as a means to communicate, promote and educate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this book, emerging economies are defined as newly industrialized countries that have not yet reached developed status, but have, in a macro-economic sense, outpaced their developing counterparts. In this context, the book highlights how education in emerging economies could extend conventional economic methods to sustainability issues, or depart from money-based calculations and business-dominated values to promotion of real-life considerations and ethical, environmental and humanistic values. With the help of this volume, readers will have a chance to look at educational response, inclusion and empowerment for SDGs in countries with emerging economies, and to grasp the synthesis of Education for Sustainable Development/Global Citizenship Education (ESD/GCE) within the overall national educational systems. This volume focuses on early childhood through upper secondary education.

Contested Waters provides an in-depth analysis of trans-boundary water conflict involving the Indus Basin in Pakistan. The book focuses on both national scale and local scale case studies to illustrate how these water conflicts are both discursively and materially driven by human institutions and politics. Through case studies of controversy over large dams, local flooding and irrigation methods, Daanish Mustafa highlights the various deeply political and institutional factors driving water conflict - specifically the disparity between national scale strategies of water politics and local scale water politics - and calls for engagement with water conflict in political terms.
