Oral phosphodiesterase5 inhibitors (PDE5i; e.g., Viagra®) have become the first line of treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. Relying on interviews with 38 physicians, this study explored moral dilemmas associated with the prescription of PDE5i. Moral dilemmas at the micro level concerned the interest of the patients in receiving medical treatment, even when this was counter-indicated. At the meso level, physicians expressed their concerns about the impact of PDE5i on their patients' partners. At the macro level, physicians discussed the substantial contribution of the pharmaceutical industry to the education of patients and physicians about pharmacological treatments for sexual problems. Physicians had no moral concerns about industry involvement, and they reported only the benefits associated with it. The study raises moral issues associated with the treatment of ED. As such, it enhances the importance of facilitating a biopsychosocial approach to treat sexual dysfunctions.

AbstractObjectiveIn this research, we examine perceptions of couple relationships and intimacy among older couples when one partner is diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), based on ambiguous loss theory.BackgroundMany studies have examined couples with one partner affected by dementia, yet few have explored intimacy when the affected partner is diagnosed with MCI.MethodA qualitative‐phenomenological approach in which data were collected through in‐depth, semistructured, face‐to‐face interviews with 16 men and women aged 67–90.ResultsThe nondiagnosed partners live in the present while acknowledging the changes caused by aging and the diagnosis. In contrast, the diagnosed partners tend to live in the past. In line with ambiguous loss theory, the nondiagnosed partners reported that their diagnosed spouses are physically present yet many aspects of their personalities are partially absent.ConclusionThe findings reveal two patterns of coping with the consequences of loss. Understanding these relationships offers insights into how to care for individuals with MCI.ImplicationsThe results highlight that individuals with MCI and their partners do not invariably constitute a homogenous group, necessitating a critical appraisal of partners' roles and expectations before initiating therapeutic interventions.

We present a recent published study on the discursive construction of residential care during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A critical discourse analysis was conducted on 54 news articles published between January 21 and May 8, 2020 in 3 leading American newspapers: The New York Times , USA Today , and The New York Post. Findings indicate that residents' voices are superseded by family members. Residential care is portrayed as shockingly dangerous, deceptive, and problematic. Blame is often assigned to an entity based on the political tendency of the newspaper. Findings and implications are discussed. Publication: Allen, L. D., & Ayalon, L. (2021). Along with the global ageing trends, there has been a growing interest in the well-being of older people among policymakers. Productive engagement in later life has been considered to be an effective way to cope with population ageing and to achieve financial, physical, mental and social well-being among older population. Many ageing societies, such as South Korea in 2004, have thus implemented measures to secure income, encourage social activities, and improve physical and psychological well-being among older adults. Even though there is substantial research regarding the primary outcomes of the government project (i.e. generating income and improving physical health), little empirical evidence supports the potential effects of the policy on mental health. In order to test the hypothetical expectation that employment of older adults would decrease mental health problems, this study aims to investigate the association between job participation of older people and their mental health (i.e. suicide ideation, depression, and self-esteem).

Background: Israeli Arab women under-utilize mental health services. Objectives: The present study evaluated the use of alternative services for dealing with depression and anxiety among Israeli Arab women and primary care providers. Material: Four focus groups with primary care patients and two focus groups with primary care providers were conducted. Constant comparisons were employed in order to identify major themes related to informal help-seeking behaviors. Discussion: Three informal help-seeking behaviors were identified: (a) social support, divided into extended family and neighbors versus nuclear family and close friends; (b) religiosity, divided into inner, direct practices and beliefs versus externally mediated ones; and (c) self-help techniques, such as engagement in activities and distancing oneself from the situation. Both social support and religiosity were viewed with ambivalence by primary care patients and providers. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the Arab population in Israel might be lacking informal sources of support at times of mental health needs.

This book argues that a narrow policy on successful ageing excludes a large portion of ageing individuals from the quest for a good life in old age. It explores various models defining successful ageing and argues that successful ageing in guiding policy will profit by following a pluralistic and holistic view.

Previous studies have documented a high prevalence of psychological distress and mental illness among older immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU) in Israel. Yet, this population rarely seeks help from mental health providers. The present study aimed to identify beliefs and attitudes about depression and anxiety among older immigrants from the FSU treated in primary care, and among their primary care physicians, who were also FSU immigrants. The study used focus group (FG) interviews with primary care patients (n = 12) and physicians (n = 23). The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using open thematic coding. Three main themes were identified: a) avoidance of discussion of mental health and stigma regarding mental illness; b) expectations to control one's mental state; and c) limited opportunities to acquire knowledge about Western mental health. Primary care physicians recognized the barriers facing their older immigrant patients concerning mental health diagnosis and treatment. Yet, due to work overload, their ability to assist older immigrants was limited. The findings suggest that older immigrants from the FSU might benefit from mental health information and exchange of ideas about Western mental health.
