A discussion of the modeling capabilities required to support analysis of human/natural system interactions in the international Human Dimensions of Global Change Programme. Such modeling capabilities must be able to encompass both a "physical flows" view of the world that focuses on the physical flows of energy & matter between human & natural systems, & an "actor system" view that emphasizes the flows of information among different human actors making decisions that affect & are affected by environmental conditions. These two views interpenetrate in complex ways. A modeling framework that can encompass both must describe physical flows in a way that is open to alternative behavioral theories of human activity; on the human side, it should also be oriented to simulation & exploration of alternative futures rather than to prediction of most likely outcomes. 6 Figures, 2 Photographs, 25 References.
