; Many disciplines have produced major studies about giants in medieval literature. However, Medieval German Literature Studies are lacking sufficient coverage. Therefore, the dissertation aims to fill this void with a conclusive study focusing on German medieval literature, with the occasional reference to Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian Studies. The project denies that there is a simple concept of giants in medieval literature and examines the coexistence of discursive formations from 800-1600 A.D. Methodologically, historical discourse analysis and historical anthropology are employed to answer questions such as whether giants were considered real in the Middle Ages, why heroes and giants are blending together semantically, and whether giant size could only be viewed as negative. The study emphasizes the versatile knowledge accessible about giants via biblical, encyclopedic, and hagiographic traditions, and occasionally pictures as well as material objects such as bones. Middle High German heroic epics, the reception of Greek mythology in the Middle Ages, and giants as instruments of political power are also core aspects of the thesis. The diverse nature of the subject requires a multidisciplinary approach and invites a more reflected view on giants when encountered in medieval texts, especially in Middle High German literature.

This book chapter, which lays out how community media share and archive programming online, tackles a poignant dilemma. Community radio and TV stations produce an extraordinary range of politically, culturally and artistically valuable content. Their focus on community building and bottom-up production models means they could draw especially pronounced benefits from the increased sophistication of interactive tools and platforms for sharing and archiving content. Making their content accessible and searchable, and securing its preservation, is essential to amplifying its reach and value over time. So why do so many broadcasters in this grassroots media sector, which should be particularly well equipped to take on the challenges of collaborative digital platforms, nevertheless still struggle to make optimal use of these opportunities? Drawing on the findings of the EU-funded project "Captcha: Creative Approaches to Living Cultural Archives," this chapter highlights inspiring examples of best practice from across Europe. But it also rings the alarm bell about the sector-specific obstacles it explores, which mean that legacies that represent not only an individual station's history, but that of whole communities, are at risk of being lost forever. ; Originally published in: Transnationalizing Radio Research: New Approaches to an Old Medium (2018), Golo Föllmer, Alexander Badenoch (eds.), pp. 223-230, transcript Verlag.

In 1663, the Spanish Benedictine monastic and artist Juan Ricci de Guevara (1600-1681) submitted theological proof of Mary's Immaculate Conception to Pope Alexander VII. This essay discusses the content and context of that manuscript. Through the knowledge and use of several religious traditions in which images were the key to the highest spiritual truths, Ricci demonstrates a mystical kind of theology. He demonstrates special attention for prophecies and visions, such as the prophecy of Malachy and the Apocalypse. Ricci applies these sources both literary and visually, in order to stress Alexander's divine, predestined role as defender of the mystery of Mary's lmmaculacy. Although relying on several theological traditions, Ricci's specific theology brought him exceptionally close to the limits of what was iconographically and literary acceptable. This essay discusses how his artistry reflected a theological and political debate.

As mentioned in the key-note drought issues are expected to increase in importance as a result of climate change. Droughts are often associated with desert like conditions in Africa but also in Europe droughts occur. Given the socio-economic values involved and the fact that measures to prevent droughts are very costly, droughts may in future even get a higher political weight than flooding, also in Europe. This will certainly be the case in countries where droughts are now already important socio-economic issues such as in Spain and Italy. Some NCR partners are already involved in drought related research but much less than in flooding research. The question arises if NCR should pay more attention to droughts and if so, how and who should be involved. These questions were discussed in this workshop.
