[EN] This paper explores the contribution the capability approach (CA) and grassroots innovation (GI) literature makes to a better understanding of the complexity, richness and specificity of bottom-up processes of social innovation (SI), and their specific contribution to social transformation. Using a purely qualitative methodology, the paper addresses a case study organic food buying groups in the city of Valencia and examines them through the lenses of SI, GI and CA. By taking four concurrent dimensions of the SI literature (agents, purposes, drivers and processes) and cross-fertilising them with the bottom-up, people-driven character of GI, and the concepts of agency, capabilities, deliberative democracy and conversion factors from the CA, the paper creates a novel framework that we call Grassroots Social Innovation for Human Development. The analysis shows the potentiality of this novel framework to illustrate the elements that a bottom-up SI process should include in order to contribute to human development. ; This study forms part of the research project "New perspective for rethinking climate change from social grassroots innovation. Over the last decades, the rise of managerialism has contributed to the depoliticisation of practices and discourses of Non-Governmental Development Organisations (NGDOs). From some quarters, the adoption of rights-based approaches (RBAs) has been seen as an opportunity to challenge this process. From this standpoint, this article aims to explore to what extent RBAs may have helped (re)politicise the discourses of NGDOs. In order to do so, we look at how eleven Spanish NGDOs that have adopted an RBA are reshaping their understandings of issues related with power, participation and accountability. The analysis reveals that the adoption of RBAs seems to be a process full of diversity, tensions and contradictions, both across and inside organisations. Whilst in some cases RBAs may have consolidated managerialism, the opposite is also true. This article aims to explore the different accountability discourses of the various actors in the Spanish international aid system and to examine them in light of the various theoretical interpretations of development accountability. The conclusions reached suggest a technical and financial accountability model, largely isolated from international debates where political and social issues are at the core of the concept. © 2021 by the authors. ; Universities are central organisations that can act as promoters and amplifiers of regional just transitions. In this paper, we analyse how a Colombian regional university, the University of Ibagué (UI), is playing this role through two initiatives: (1) a governance experiment piloted between 2018 and 2019 that constructed an aspirational vision for this university through the definition of eight human capabilities; (2) a formal curriculum regional programme named Peace and Region (P&R) established in 2010 as a service-learning strategy for undergraduates in their final year. To analyse the contribution of these two initiatives towards a just transition, we built a specific analytical framework based on the human development and capability approach and Regional Transition Pathways to Sustainability (RTPS). Exploring both the content and the process of building the list and perceptions of the different actors involved in the P&R programme, we found that both initiatives have a strong directionality that resonates with the normative ambition of a just transition. Moreover, in both processes, people involved have expanded human capabilities, and co-produced holistic and transdisciplinary knowledge through the interaction of academic and non-academic actors. From an RTPS perspective, the programme captures regional complexity and moulds micro-dynamics to socially fair and sustainable paths. ; The fieldwork done in Colombia by Alejandra Boni was funded by BEST/2019 Programme of the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia, Spain) and CYTED Programme through the Red Multibien (618RT0560). [EN] In this paper we explore the role of Digital Grassroots Innovation (DGI) in the construction of a more participatory smart city. 18 DGIs from four Spanish cities (Santander, Valencia, Bilbao, and San Sebastián) were analysed. They belong to 4 different types of digital innovation: Open Hardware: understood as projects inspired by the maker movement; Open Knowledge: large groups of citizens who join through online platforms to collectively create a new type of knowledge or social projects; Open Data: innovative ways of opening, capturing, using, analysing and interpreting data; and Open Networks: networks of citizens who are developing new networks and infrastructures, to collectively share resources and solve problems. In all cases, the DGIs constitute a varied repertoire of initiatives where the purpose of digital innovation is not only to solve problems that affect citizens, but also to make spaces for the creation and empowerment of critical citizens that are vigilant of the actions of public and private powers.
