The role of women in the recent history of Wales is an area that has received scant attention from social scientists and historians. This book will therefore seek to fill that gap by drawing upon the family stories told about women's roles in education, the chapel and the family to address some of the important gaps in the knowledge base

Most people who work and study in universities will be aware that they are changing. Yet few have so far grasped the extent of this change or have attempted to put it in a coherent intellectual framework. This volume provides new ways to understand how the university workforce in developed nations is being encouraged to change itself, and how the social role of these institutions has shifted from places of higher learning toward being agents for social change and the promotion of human welfare. Moreover the demands that are being placed on institutions and the kinds of graduates they are required to produce has changed too, with the emphasis on a new brand of vocationalism and a reinvigorated focus on 'skills' and 'employability'. This volume provides a theoretically informed, philosophically sophisticated account of what universities in developed nations are being encouraged to do, and the impact this has on their staff, students and the societies of which they are a part.

Drawing energy from a debate about the efficacy of parental monitoring, research over the first decade of the 21st century has traced numerous ways in which parenting practices and parent–child relationship features affect adolescents' peer interactions, and how these 2 factors interact to affect adolescent adjustment. In reviewing this research, this paper extols methodological advances and growing diversity of samples while critiquing conceptual underpinnings of many investigations. Suggestions are offered to guide research toward a more contextually sensitive, integrative understanding of dynamic, reciprocal processes between general and peer‐focused parenting processes and adolescent peer relations.

A behavioural estimate of the koala's dependence on vision was made using fabric hoods to degrade
the vision of ten male koalas. Koalas were placed on the ground in a square enclosure, with a centrally
placed 'tree'. With unobstructed vision, the koalas quickly travelled across the ground to the tree and
climbed it. However, with severely reduced vision, the koalas would not search for or climb the tree.
When their vision was obscured, the koalas tended to raise their forelegs when walking, taking high,
reaching steps. The koala appears to require a certain minimum level of vision before climbing trees.
Ocular chlamydial infection, which can cause a significant visual loss, may result in similar changes in
behaviour and thus contribute to mortality.

Experimental burning of mallee (Eucalyptus spp.) and shrub vegetation has been done in New South Wales to stimulate plant growth for grazing sheep and cattle. In March 1984 fires were started by an aerial ignition technique in a 'paddock' of 116 km2 and a study was made, by aerial surveys, of movements of kangaroos (Macropus rufus and M. fuliginosus) into the area. Such movements would detract from the benefit to grazing stock. It was found that on this occasion the burned area did not attract kangaroos, apparently because good winter rains gave adequate food for them elsewhere. It is suggested that burning for grazing is likely to be most beneficial where winter rains are most predictable, i.e. inside the mallee zone.
