It is now a little more than two years since Mikhail Gorbachev became General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party, and, since then, the constant theme in the news from the Soviet Union has been one of change. This has been reflected in the style of leadership, and in the slogans adopted by the new administration, such as 'reconstruction', 'renewal', and 'acceleration'. There has also been much talk of new policy directions, but how significant have the changes really been, and what are their consequences for Soviet society?

AbstractThis article offers a critique of the tendency in research on peasant farming to categorise households into groups using measures of inequality as the main criteria. Since such groupings are used to make generalisations about processes of class formation, or about differences in production organisation between peasant farms, it is suggested that factors which are more direct indicators of relations of production should be employed. Two approaches which have attempted such alternative methods are then discussed and evaluated as models for future research. These arc the empirical research associated with the recent debate on the class character of peasant agriculture in India, and research on the differentiation of the peasantry in the Soviet Union in the 1920sRésuméHabituellement les recherches en agriculture precèdent à des classements des ménages en utilisant des mesures ?inégalité comme critères principaux.

Of all the scholarly work on the countryside done in pre-1917 Russia and in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, that of L.N. Kritsman and those influenced by him - the so-called 'Agrarian Marxists' - is perhaps the least well known. However, that work was of extremely high quality and very original.
