The Master and Margarita: The Reach Exceeds the Grasp
In: Slavic review: interdisciplinary quarterly of Russian, Eurasian and East European studies, Band 31, Heft 1, S. 89-100
ISSN: 2325-7784
When The Master and Margarita first appeared some five years ago in the journal Moskva and soon after in the English translations, it caused the sensation appropriate to long-withheld Russian literary works. On all sides it was hailed as a literary event of broad implications. American and British reviewers, introducing Bulgakov to their reading public, stressed the significance of this thirty-year-old novel in relation to progressive tendencies in contemporary Soviet literature. The novel was also generally assessed as a work of major literary importance in its own right. But there were reservations. Rich in conception and striking in form, The Master and Margarita seemed to many somehow flawed in the execution. These readers found the book extremely attractive on various levels, yet felt, along with the novel's British translator, Michael Glenny, that the keystone had just missed being slipped into place.

Memorias grabadas. Speeches and representations in documentaries about the Margarita Belén Massacre
; The Margarita Belén Massacre constitutes a key event in the history of the last military dictatorship in the Province of Chaco. Since the public events that occurred on December 13, 1976, in the city of Margarita Belén, the governments of the day and different organizations have intervened to install their own interpretations of the past and keep alive a specific collective memory. We propose in this presentation to analyze the public and political uses of memory and history regarding the Margarita Belén Massacre in audiovisual documentaries produced on the subject. We will focus on documentaries: - "The Massacre of Margarita Belén" (2009, Provincial Commission for Memory -Chaco). - "Margarita Belén: the complete story" (2012, "Peronismo 26 de Julio" -Regional NEAand Estrella Federal Producciones, Marcelo González). - "Margarita is not a Flower" (2013, Deduka Cine, Cecilia Fiel). We focus, on the one hand, on the social actors (the Provincial State, mainly through the Undersecretary of Human Rights, civil organizations, associations of victims and relatives, journalists, political activists, documentary makers, among others) who intervened in the processes. of idea and realization, with the writing of scripts, oral testimony or contributions of documentation. On the other hand, we will stop at the analysis of the speeches and representations that are built and the links that are made between collective memory and historical research. This will allow us to address, from a particular type of source, the memory policies carried out by actors and institutions and the public uses of the past that they imply.
