AbstractBy relying on province‐level data from Italy, this paper empirically studies the factors that correlate with the development of third sector organizations (TSOs) in the Italian territory. Moving beyond traditional explanations of TSOs development based on population heterogeneity theories, our analysis points to the role of public institutions as key driving factors of Italian TSOs development. It specifically suggests that public authorities may shape the development of TSOs through three different, albeit interconnected, institutional dimensions: (1) control of corruption—that is, design and implementation of policies and regulations to prevent corruption and strengthen trust in the relationships between public authorities and TSOs; (2) rule of law—that is, creation of stable legal frameworks to reduce the uncertainty faced by TSOs when collaborating with the public sector and to limit arbitrary decisions by politicians and bureaucrats; (3) government effectiveness—that is, improving governments' credibility and administrative capacity to provide grants and funds to TSOs for social and public services delivery.

9 Páginas.-- 7 Figuras ; Strawberry extrudate (SE) is a by-product derived from the elaboration of strawberry-tasted products. Adequate management of this substrate would entail a new source of benefit for the berry sector, instead of a costly waste to be treated. The aim of this work is to assess the potential use of SE as a carbon soured for volatile fatty acids (VFA) production through anaerobic fermentation at controlled pH (5, and 9) and without pH control (operational pH around 7). Anaerobic digestion at pH 7 resulted in a negligible accumulation of VFA, being mainly degraded to methane. The operation at the other pHs resulted in a marked drop in methane production and, thus, the accumulation of VFA. At pH 9, around 50% of the fed CODtot (total chemical oxygen demand) was accumulated as VFA. Acetic acid represented 61% of these total VFA. The operation at pH 5 resulted in a lower VFA accumulation, i.e. 15% fed CODtot, although the VFA profile was more complex than at pH 9. <b><i>Background:</i></b> Clinicians in the field of drug addiction have started to exploit the growth of Technology-Based Interventions (TBIs). However, there is little information on how health personnel evaluate them. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> Semi-structured interviews were conducted among 20 European experts. <b><i>Results:</i></b> All of the interviewees recognised TBIs as a valuable tool to improve the management of substance-use disorders (SUDs). Most interviewees indicated that combining both traditional face-to-face therapist-patient clinic appointment with TBIs is probably the most effective method. Most interviewees agree that TBIs are valuable tools to overcome both physical and social barriers, and hence significantly facilitate the access to treatment. Poor infrastructure and lack of digital literacy are recognised as major barriers to the diffusion of these tools. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> The application of various forms of technology in SUD treatment is an interesting development for the European Union. Technical and non-technical barriers exist and impede their full exploitation.
