Within international relations scholarship, the nature of international organizations and their relationship with each other and nation-states has been widely contested. This edited volume brings together a team of experts to shed new light on inter-organizational relations in world politics. The book covers areas from the rule of law and international security to business and sport. Through its analysis, it demonstrates that, just as inter-organizational relations themselves are diverse and complex, research on this topic should also be pluralistic in order to draw new and valuable results and insights.

AbstractThis article compares the trends and theoretical positions found in the recent academic literature on the status and trajectory of transatlantic relations with the beliefs of 96 German and US foreign policy experts. The qualitative data are derived from open-ended in-depth interviews about the political, economic, and cultural factors that influence transatlantic cooperation and friction. Conducted in Berlin in 2011 and in Washington, D.C., in 2017, the interviews correspond with optimist and pessimist perceptions found in the academic literature and align roughly with realist, respectively, liberal/institutionalist and constructivist theoretical positions in International Relations theory and left/right political leanings. The study concludes with suggestions about the prospects for transatlantic relations, and the methodological benefits of comparing beliefs of foreign policy actors with theoretical paradigms and trends in the academic literature.

In 1995, the UN Commission on Global Governance published their "Our Global Neighbourhood" report and the academic journal "Global Governance: A Review of Multilateralism and International Organizations" was launched. Both events in retrospect play a significant role in the emergence of global governance thinking and practice in world politics. Despite inherent ambiguities, this idea since then gained massive traction and became both a modality and a heuristic of world politics. Advancing a pragmatist framework, we unpack global governance in terms of the beliefs which underline and guide it. These beliefs are important since they, as rules for action, define the scope of global governance as a theoretical and a political concept. Reconstructing these beliefs directly from the 1995 report, the article highlights the inherent conflations of normative and analytical commitments indicative of global governance. As a projection surface of all kinds, we believe such a reconsideration of global governance is important to (a) reveal the baselines of its thinking and practice, (b) indicate how its normative and analytical ambitions overlap and conflate, and (c) contribute to a more reflective discussion on the idea which explicitly considers its inherent normativity. At the same time, we hope to show the value of a pragmatist framework on beliefs for the study of world politics.

Both political activism by pop musicians and the discussion of popular culture in international relations (IR) have been on the rise in recent years. A closer look at the political meaning of mainstream pop songs, however, is still missing. Therefore, we examine the political worldviews that become manifest in the lyrics of US and German top ten hits from 1960 to 2009. A remarkable feature of these worldviews is the rejection of political institutions and actors in a mood of alienation and disenchantment, along with a strong appeal to the responsibility of individuals to autonomously tackle societal deficiencies. This appeal is based on a pronounced trust in people's capacity to solve problems jointly and without any interference by institutionalized politics. In this context, the growing recognition of political activism by so-called celebrity diplomats may be linked to these worldviews. Reflections on normative implications of the political worldviews, in turn, raise delicate questions about legitimate agency and the way public affairs are organized. "Aus Sicht seiner Herausgeber stellt der Band eine Reaktion darauf dar, dass es im Rahmen der deutschsprachigen ,IB', der politikwissenschaftlichen Teildisziplin der Internationalen Beziehungen also, aber auch in der Weltpolitikforschung keinen Ort für die systematische Reflexion von Methodenfragen zu geben scheint. Daraus wird jedoch nicht abgeleitet, dass es eines solchen Ortes nicht bedürfe, etwa weil Forschenden, die Kant, Hegel und Marx im Original zu lesen vermögen, methodenpraktische Probleme gänzlich fremd wären. Vielmehr geht es darum, sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungspraxis auf dem Gebiet der Weltpolitik zu thematisieren sowie durch ihre möglichst detailgetreue Darstellung und Reflexion durchaus auch zu entmystifizieren. Ganz konkret soll dargelegt werden, wie zu Fragen der Weltpolitik geforscht werden kann und wie die ontologischen, epistemologischen, methodologischen und wissenschaftstheoretischen Prämissen und Implikationen lauten, die im Kontext dieser Forschungspraxis eine Rolle spielen. Die Beiträge des Bandes wenden sich an alle, deren Interesse sozialwissenschaftlicher Weltpolitikforschung gilt; sei es, weil sie bereits forschend tätig sind oder sei es, weil sie erst mit dem Forschen beginnen möchten. Es handelt sich hier weder um ein Lehrbuch, noch um reine Abstraktion. Stattdessen wird darauf gehofft, formal-theoretisch durchaus fundierte Einblicke in sozialwissenschaftliche 'Labore', oder etwas weniger emphatisch ausgedrückt, in die Forschungspraxis der Bearbeitung von Fragen der Weltpolitik zu geben. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist die Einleitung in drei unterschiedlich große Schritte gegliedert. In einem ersten Schritt wird kurz das Verständnis der Autoren von 'Weltpolitik' (1.1) skizziert, in einem zweiten Schritt wird etwas ausführlicher dargestellt, was für sie 'Rekonstruktion' bedeutet (1.2).
