SINCE 1993, SOUTH KOREA HAS EMBRACED A POLICY OF ACCELERATED ECONOMIC LIBERALIZATION AND GLOBALIZATION WITH FAR REACHING IMPLICATIONS FOR THE FUTURE. THIS PAPER EXAMINES THE IMPETUS TO LIBERALIZATION AND INTERNATIONALIZATION, IN BOTH INTERNATIONAL AND DOMESTIC CONTEXTS. IT THEN REVIEWS THE ECONOMIC LIBERALIZATION PROCESS AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON THE RECENT ACCELERATION OF LIBERALIZATION SCHEDULES. THEN IT DISCUSSES THE STRATEGIC QUESTIONS POSED FOR THE SOUTH KOREAN POLITICAL ECONOMY BY THE PROSPECT OF GLOBALIZATION AND EXAMINES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LIBERALIZATION, GLOBALIZATION, AND DOMESTIC REFORM.

In November 1986, a bizarre series of rumours, news reports and official announcements originating in South Korea briefly created the impression in the West that the leader of North Korea, Kim Il Sung, was dead. By reconstructing this intriguing episode, the author attempts to demonstrate that among the claims made by South Korea concerning this incident there was no evidence that could be substantiated.
