This paper provides a systematic, detailed analysis of UK mass media online reports and narratives on sport and Covid-19 during the main lockdown period over March-May 2020. A "structuralist thematic" approach is utilized to identify and to map systematically the main themes within the mass media. The research is based on reports and narratives on sport-Covid which featured in five leading online UK mass media outlets. The analysis sets out four underpinning statuses or dimensions of sport: the existential, normative, socio-cultural, and political. These dimensions connect directly and, respectively, to four sets of binary opposite media themes on sport during the Covid-19 lockdown: sport as absence/presence, selfish/altruistic, crisis/escape, and threat/solution. Each theme features several types of media report or commentary (which we term "narrative or substantive strands") on sport-Covid. The paper examines the four binary opposites, and their various types of media report and narrative, in detail. It concludes by discussing the theoretical contributions and substantive findings from the study, and some areas for future research.

Our analysis centres specifically on critically examining and developing the concept of 'citimer' (citizen-consumer) with respect to activist supporter groups within European professional men's football. First, to establish the structural and cultural context for our analysis, we argue that the emergence of citizen-consumer identities in football has been driven by five underlying processes: globalization, commodification, securitization, mediatization, and postmodernization. Critical football fan movements have responded to these changes through greater reflexivization and politicization. Second, drawing on the broad academic literature, we develop the concept of the citizen-consumer (or 'citimer') and introduce its relevance to football. Third, to provide a more nuanced understanding of the citizen-consumer, we explore how this 'citimer' identity is constructed in two ways: 'from below' (by fan groups themselves at everyday level) and 'from above' (by clubs, governing bodies, media and other powerful forces within the football system). In both instances, we find that the citizen and consumer aspects of the citimer identity are interrelated in complex ways. Fourth, we conclude by highlighting the political reflexivity of citimers, and areas for future research. Our analysis draws on extensive data collection: with football supporters and officials in the Czech Republic, England and Italy, and at the wider European level; and, through access to diverse primary and secondary documents (e.g. policy papers, fanzines, and online forums). Our findings may be applied to examine citimer identities, practices and social relations not just within football and sport, but in many other cultural fields, such as art, communication, drama, fashion, film, and music.

We provide a critical elaboration of Boltanski and Thévenot's theory of the six 'orders of worth' or 'worlds' of justification that are drawn upon by social actors within these disputes. We examine how social actors may draw upon multiple justifications (or worlds) in order to advance their positions or interests; how power differences arise between these worlds; and, how weak worlds of justification may extend their influence within specific issues. To elaborate our analysis, we discuss the public issue of Olympic bidding and hosting, and how key social actors or stakeholders (such as local and national governments, event sponsors, and sport bodies) draw on different worlds of justification, particularly in advocating the staging of these events. This issue indicates that the six worlds are organised hierarchically into three 'levels of worth': the market, fame, and domestic worlds are the most prominent, while civic world arguments have least influence. These power differentials are reflected further in the criticisms and compromises that arise between the civic world and other worlds. We conclude by examining how civic world justifications may be accorded greater prominence within sport and other public issues such as those relating to Olympic bidding and hosting.

Artykuł analizuje konstytuowanie się bezpieczeństwa na igrzyskach olimpijskich jako kwestię centralną dla organizatorów i ruchu olimpijskiego oraz konsekwencje organizacji igrzysk dla lokalnej społeczności i narodowej polityki bezpieczeństwa. Zakłada się, że igrzyska olimpijskie, jako wydarzenie o wysokim profilu medialnym, dostarczają coraz bardziej atrakcyjnych politycznie możliwości dla wielu aktorów – szczególnie, gdy są rozgrywane w takim mieście jak Londyn. Od czasów ataków z 11 września w Nowym Jorku odnotowano gwałtowny wzrost wydatków na zabezpieczenie igrzysk olimpijskich, wydaje się, że znacząco nieproporcjonalnie do możliwego ryzyka. Koszt zabezpieczania rósł: od 108 milionów dolarów w 1996 roku (Atlanta) do blisko 2 miliardów dolarów w 2012 (Londyn). Argumentuje się, że okres od 2001 roku charakteryzuje się hiperniepewnością i kulturą intensywnej awersji do ryzyka, opartą nie na prawdopodobieństwie, ale na możliwości ataku. W konsekwencji dochodzi do znieczulania narodów organizujących igrzyska na wzrastającą sekurytyzację w ich miastach. Twierdzi się również, że wpływ na lokalną społeczność Newham w Londynie będzie znaczący nie tylko w rezultacie intensywnego poziomu kontroli, ale także z powodu przebudowy związanej z igrzyskami i użycia infrastruktury nadzoru do stworzenia zamkniętych osiedli w miejscu wioski olimpijskiej. W konkluzjach dyskutowane są długoterminowe implikacje wzrastającej sekurytyzacji igrzysk, w tym normalizacji intensywnego nadzoru, dalszego naruszania swobód obywatelskich i rosnącego napięcia między wartościami przyjętymi przez ruch olimpijski a rzeczywistą organizacją igrzysk.

AbstractThis paper provides a sociological model of the key transnational political and economic forces that are shaping the 'global football field'. The model draws upon, and significantly extends, the theory of the 'global field' developed previously by Robertson. The model features four quadrants, each of which contains a dominant operating principle, an 'elemental reference point', and an 'elemental theme'. The quadrants contain, first, neo‐liberalism, associated with the individual and elite football clubs; second, neo‐mercantilism, associated with nation‐states and national football systems; third, international relations, associated with international governing bodies; and fourth, global civil society, associated with diverse institutions that pursue human development and/or social justice. We examine some of the interactions and tensions between the major institutional and ideological forces across the four quadrants. We conclude by examining how the weakest quadrant, featuring global civil society, may gain greater prominence within football. In broad terms, we argue that our four‐fold model may be utilized to map and to examine other substantive research fields with reference to globalization.

We discuss the contribution of three types of critical perspective that are tied to different disciplines, namely sociology, human geography, and political science/international relations. Second, we turn to consider some of the main historical and contemporary incidents and issues with regard to terrorism at sport mega-events. On this basis, we show how and why social scientific analysis needs to move beyond common-sense understandings of the sport/terrorism couplet, to investigate critically the epistemologies and discursive constructions of terror, the logics, processes and relationships underpinning specific counter-terrorism strategies, and the wider socio-spatial implications thereof.

Particular attention is paid to a hitherto under-explored subject: the complex position of the military vis-a-vis sport and sport-related peacekeeping. Through an historical overview of the sport-military intersection, reference to fieldwork in Bosnia and Liberia, and a brief examination of the Conseil Internationale du Sport Militaire, some critical and cautious conclusions are put forth. We suggest that sport-based peacemaking interventions provide the military with a new kind of institutional function, and fresh ways of building positive social links to civilian populations. However, such engagement is only possible if full dialogical engagement between civilians and peacekeeping forces is established, in which the military adapt their practices to suit the local cultural context.
