Pierre Bourdieu's critique of public opinion (PO) surveys ("Public Opinion Does Not Exist," in Mallelart, A. & Siegelaub, S. [Eds], Communication and Class Struggle, New York: International General, 1979) is applied to a recent US political phenomenon -- the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court nomination hearings of 1991. Examples of newspaper opinion polls are used to argue that journalists reified PO in this case. It is concluded that PO researchers must study & understand Bourdieu's arguments if they are to understand the social construction of PO. 16 References. Modified AA

A survey of 44 journalists whose careers spanned all or much of the 1930s and 1940s found that journalists developed a variety of innovative strategies for understanding public opinion — both systematic and unsystematic. This period was a transitional one for journalists who depended on traditional measurement techniques yet were also interested in quantifying the public sentiment.
