Reviews current debates in Marxism, with a view toward possible future theoretical movements in the field. Following a brief historical introduction to historical materialism, the most controversial issues in Karl Marx's work & Marxist theory are identified, among them, the theory of value; common social work & abstract work; work as a lasting activity; liberation, time, & existence; the philosophy of history & historiography; the history of capitalism & the historiography of the working class; materialism, naturalism, & realism; & epistemological problems. It is remarked that current political manifestations of Marxism have little connection with either socialist Marxism or Marxist-Leninism. While the study of Marx's works fails to inspire human revolution on a political scale, insights into the mechanics of domination & exploitation can still be gained. 13 References. A review essay on a book by Francisco Fernandez Buey, Marx (sin ismos) ([Marx (without Isms)] Barcelona: El Viejo Topo, 1998). Buey's overly specific & detailed approach to the Spanish perspective on Karl Marx's life is criticized. It is contended that this attempt to produce a biography of Marx outside of the vast historical & political contexts that have been constructed over the past century falls into the first wave of Marx biographies that were published before the 1917 Russian Revolution, works that focused on parallels between his life events & his writings. The approach is described as lapidary-like, where pieces of Marx's life & work are cut from their historical & philosophical traditions & presented as an assortment of erudite minutiae. Though the lack of historical & theoretical cynicism toward Marxism proves refreshing, Buey's understanding of materialism, empiricism, & humanism (& other "isms" he wishes to abandon) appears ambiguous & inaccurate, seriously undermining the book's academic value.
