The following interview with Friedrich Kittler, conducted by Christoph Weinberger in July 2007, is a passionate and instructive tour de force of pithy sound bites in which Kittler looks back on his work and criticizes alternate approaches to media.

This essay traces the advances in time axis manipulation brought about by the media switches from symbolic mediation (alphabet) to analogue recording (phonography and cinematography) and digital processing (computers). Special emphasis is on the mathematical dimension of the final stage. The Fourier transform enables the conversion of sound events into periodicities with numerical values that can then be manipulated and converted back into sound events, even if there was no original source involved. The media access frequencies and operate at speeds beyond all human thresholds. Kittler argues that the resulting ability to subvert and simulate human perception is the very definition of technical media.

The essay presents a reading of three war-related texts: Friedrich Schiller's Wilhelm Tell, Heinrich von Kleist's The Battle of Hermann, and Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow. Written against the background of the Revolutionary Wars and the Prussian Wars of Liberation, respectively, the plays by Schiller and Kleist engage in the discursive construction of an emphatic sense of heimat (home), either by way of creating the new sentiment of homesickness (originally called nostalgia) or by advocating the complete destruction of the very home territory you are trying to defend. Gravity's Rainbow, in turn, decodes the Second World War as a massive exercise in technology transfer. It effectively presents a deconstruction of heimat in an age in which the imperative to merge technologies supersedes all national agendas.

Taking issue with many official accounts, the essay traces the origins of the German autobahn back to the Battle of Verdun (1916). The military necessity to organize rigidly enforced, intersection-free two-way traffic becomes the model for the construction of the autobahn. Kittler further elaborates its martial character by connecting the movement of military equipment during war to the "tourist invasions" in peacetime.

The essay traces the intertwined martial and theatrical histories of searchlights, floodlights, stage lamps, and laterna magica. Inspired in part by Paul Virilio's emphasis on the close link between war and illumination, the argument centers on the ability of the searchlight to pinpoint objects, isolate them from their surroundings, and thus target them for destruction.

The paper provides a brief outline of the way in which the history of war redraws the boundaries between humans, animals (wild and domesticated), and machines.
