"Through an examination of the Great Peace (taiping), one of the first utopian visions in Chinese history, Zhao Lu describes the transformation of literati culture that occurred during the Han Dynasty. Driven by anxiety over losing the mandate of Heaven, the imperial court encouraged classicism in order to establish the Great Peace and follow Heaven's will. But instead of treating the literati as puppets of competing and imagined lineages, Zhao uses sociological methods to reconstruct their daily lives and to show how they created their own thought by adopting, modifying, and opposing the work of their contemporaries and predecessors. The literati who served as bureaucrats in the first century BCE gradually became classicists who depended on social networking as they traveled to study the classics. By the second century CE, classicism had dissolved in this traveling culture and the literari began to expand the corpus of knowledge beyond the accepted canon. Thus, far from being static, classicism in Han China was full of innovation, and ultimately gave birth to both literary writing and religious Daoism"--

Der globale Klimawandel zählt zu den größten Herausforderungen für die Menschheit und hat seit langem große Aufmerksamkeit sowohl von der Regierung als auch der Öffentlichkeit auf sich gezogen. Die Art und Weise, wie er in den Massenmedien dargestellt und konstituiert wird, kann das öffentliche Verständnis der Menschen gegenüber diesem wissenschaftlich hochkomplexen, langfristigen und nicht direkt wahrnehmbaren Phänomen unmittelbar beeinflussen. Ziel des Buches ist es, den medialen Klimawandeldiskurs in Deutschland und in China von 2009 bis 2013 möglichst vollständig und authentisch darzustellen und dessen jeweilige Perspektive auszuwerten. Es wird untersucht, wie das Klimawandelverständnis in den Medien der jeweils größten Volkswirtschaften Europas und Asiens textbasiert aufgebaut ist. Mithilfe korpuslinguistischer Methoden werden mehr als 9000 Medientexte aus renommierten deutschen und chinesischen Printmedien im Rahmen der pragma-semiotischen Textarbeit von Feldern und der Perspektivität-Theorie schrittweise analysiert. Mit dem selbst aufgebauten Untersuchungskorpus werden quantitative und qualitative Vorgehensweisen kombiniert, damit die thematischen Schwerpunkte, die handlungsleitenden Konzepte sowie die agonalen Zentren im deutschen und chinesischen Klimawandel-Diskurs anhand des diskursiven Sprachgebrauchsmusters ermittelt werden können ...

Calls for justice and reconciliation in response to political catastrophes are widespread in contemporary world politics. What implications do these normative strivings have in relation to colonial injustice? Examining cases of colonial war, genocide, forced sexual labor, forcible incorporation, and dispossession, Lu demonstrates that international practices of justice and reconciliation have historically suffered from, and continue to reflect, colonial, statist and other structural biases. The continued reproduction of structural injustice and alienation in modern domestic, international and transnational orders generates contemporary duties of redress. How should we think about the responsibility of contemporary agents to address colonial structural injustices and what implications follow for the transformation of international and transnational orders? Redressing the structural injustices implicated in or produced by colonial politics requires strategies of decolonization, decentering, and disalienation that go beyond interactional practices of justice and reconciliation, beyond victims and perpetrators, and beyond a statist world order.

This book provides essential legal information on state secession in an innovative manner: unlike conventional approaches, which invariably focus on whether there is a right to secession, here the discussion centers on how secessionist conflicts can be effectively resolved. To that end, the book not only reveals the inadequacy of the current international legal framework, but also carefully considers how relevant actors can work to improve the legal system. In short, it argues that secessionists and non-secessionists should conclude an agreement to reconcile their conflicting rights to self-determination, while external actors should do their utmost to ensure the success of these efforts. Positive external involvement requires external actors to refrain from the use of force and to participate more rationally in secessionist conflicts. Given its subject matter, the book will appeal to a broad readership, including students and researchers in international law, international relations and ethnic studies, as well as enthusiasts in these fields.--
