An examination of the historical evolving relationship of history & sociology, since the nineteenth century when the difference between scientific & historical knowledge was recognized. The emergence of sociology & the study of modern history were part of the developing modern historical consciousness. Focus is on: the particularly US inclination of regarding history (wrongly) as a social science; the crisis of historical study in the twentieth century & its tendency to retrospective sociology; & history as a form of thought. It is argued that the purpose of science is accuracy (& therefore, predictability), while the purpose of history is understanding. Modified AA

(SWP-Hld)
