Carinthia's nationality struggle has raged more or less unabated since 1848. Until roughly two decades ago there was a relative dearth of secondary materials that one might regard as scholarly in any sense of the word. Polemics—admittedly of some value as a special kind of source material—predominated. Indeed emotional overtones still creep into serious studies. On balance, however, recent work in both Yugoslavia and Austria may be characterized as objective, solid, and methodologically innovative. While articles and books published in the former country are no less significant than those emanating from the latter, only titles that have appeared in German can be reviewed here.

A study of the relationship between armed service & nobility during the Holy Roman Empire in general & among the Habsburgs in particular. The nobility of the Early Modern Period had the roles of "farm manager, agrarian renter, administrator-bureaucrat, & military enterpriser," all of which were connected to land control. The nobility was stratified, & embodied six major characteristics: (1) hereditary identification with nobility, (2) acceptance in the noble circle, (3) marriage restricted among stratified levels of nobility, (4) the restricted heraldic code of the nobility, (5) the noble code of ethics & conduct, & (6) the consciousness of nobility for generations with or without the necessary means to support the position. The army & the nobility are traced in baroque Austria in general & through the Furstenbergs, the Wengerskys, & the British soldier in Austria. Mobility in the society occurred primarily through the armed service, until the end of the eighteenth century when the society closed until WWI due to the "structural change in military entrepreneurship." L. Milner.
