The ethical world of British MPs
The ethical standards of the British House of Commons depend almost entirely upon the personal ethics of its individual members. Parliament expects that its members, as holders of a public trust, will be "honourable members" in both name and deed. Maureen Mancuso examines the current state of British legislative ethics and raises important theoretical questions about whether the ethical standards of an institution should be left in the hands of individual members. Based on extensive personal interviews with more than one hundred MPs, Mancuso's is the first systematic investigation of British legislative ethics. Identifying significant divergence in ethical attitudes, she divides MPs into four types: the Puritans, who stake out the moral high ground; the Servants, who conform to the traditional ideal of the MP as public-spirited constituency advocate; the Muddlers, who are not bothered by personal conflicts of interest; and the Entrepreneurs, who use their position to achieve any end not explicitly prohibited. The implications of this unexpectedly diverse ethical ecosystem are explored, as well as various possibilities for reform.
In: Estudos internacionais: revista de relações internacionais da PUC Minas, Band 11, Heft 1, S. 25-46
ISSN: 2317-773X

The "controversy over the Yanomami" has affected central issues, both epistemological and ethical and political, for the discipline and practice of anthropology, particularly concerning the ethics of field research; the way to use research data to support certain theoretical hypotheses; the relationships between popularization and politicization of research and, more generally, the responsibility of anthropologists with respect to both the uses of their studies in the public sphere and towards the human subjects with whom they work. In this article, I examine some key moments of the "controversy". In particular, I try to reconstruct the way in which the image of the Yanomami as the "last primitive society" was initially consolidated, inside and outside anthropology, and, in this sense, I compare the ethnographies of Chagnon and Lizot. In the paper, I also place particular emphasis on the different ways in which ethnographers have textually marked their positioning in the field as "proof" of the "authenticity" of their representations of the Yanomami world. In the last part, I summarize the effects of the "media storm" on American anthropology, which were caused by the accusations of ethically inappropriate, if not completely execrable, behavior addressed to Chagnon and Lizot in Darkness in El Dorado, the book-report by journalist Patrick Tierney.

In this paper I propose a critical examination of the ways in which the intersections between violence, suffering and domination in some of the main new directions of the anthropological study of the relationships between humans and other animals, notably Ingold's approach, Descola's theory of "schemas of the practice", and multispecies ethnography. Apparently, and despite the emphasis given to the sentience and forms of agency of non-human animals, as well as to their being active coparticipants, together with humans, in the construction of social networks and the habitats that bind both, these intersections do not occupy a prominent place in these approaches, both from the point of view of their theoretical framework and from that of the ethnographic descriptions. The elusive place that the intersections between violence, suffering and domination occupies in contemporary approaches to humans/ other animals relationships has an important consequence in the the lack of a mutually constructive confrontation with animal advocacy's movements and with the ethical and political theories to which these movements are inspired. It seems desirable and urgent to consider today the issues of suffering and violence inflicted on non-human animals assuming a careful listening posture at positions other than one's own. Such pluralism, to be adopted both on the level of scientific debate and on that of dialogue between different ethical options, is pointed to by some important proposals developed both in other fields of contemporary anthropology and in the reflection on future prospects for the development of an "ecological justice"

L'efficacia normativa delle buone prassi nel processo civile ; Italian civil procedural system between hard and soft law: the role of best practices
; This research analyzes the role and the effect of the so called best practices (i.e. practical rules formalized in procedural agreements) in the Italian procedural system and identifies their legal nature. Through an empirical analysis, it comes to a series of theoretical conclusions, so far rarely discussed in literature, aimed at demonstrating the current complexity of the Italian civil procedural system. Civil litigation, in fact, is not only regulated by hard procedural law (i.e. code of civil procedure, it's amendments, and extra-codicem rules), but also by atypical sources, not binding and merely persuasive, which, however, have a certain legal relevance, influencing the exercise of judicial decisions and occupying an intermediary position between the law and its practical application. The research then addresses the issues related to the compatibility of a system thus reconstructed with the constitutional guarantees and, in particular, with the principle of legality, coming to believe that the procedural system is currently in an evolutionary phase, resulting from a model derived from common law systems as well as from European Union law.

Una vicenda tracia: Tereo fra tragedia e politica
My paper focuses on the Thracian setting of Sophocles' Tereus, which I regard as an innovation carried out by Sophocles himself. The originality of this choice can be demonstrated through an analysis of Thucydides' (3, 29, 3) and Pausanias' (10, 4, 8) witnesses, which attest a Daulian setting for the same story. It is therefore possible to demonstrate that the myth's displacement resulting from its setting in Thrace can be read as a criticism of Thrace itself, with which Athens had difficult relations at the time. This argumentation is corroborated by an analysis of some aspects of Tereus: the differentiation between "foreigners" and "barbarians" presented in fragment 583 Radt2; the glossectomy which Tereus inflicted on Philomela (referring to the hostility of the barbarians toward ἰσηγορία); the prejudice about the greed of the barbarians (Fr. 587 Radt2); the possible Dionysian background (Frr, 591, 595a Radt2). In this respect, the witness of Thucydides (2, 29, 3), who defends the Thracian king Teres from the accusation of being related to Tereus, seems to be crucial, since in his opinion Tereus was a Thracian from Daulis. Thucydides' polemical target could be Sophocles, who through his Tereus aimed to take position within the debate between philo-Thracian and anti-Thracian trends, particularly urgent in Athens during Teres' and Sitalces' hegemony over Thrace. Sabrina Mancuso is currently a Lecturer in Greek Grammar and Translation of Greek Texts at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen. After graduating in Pisa, she completed her Ph.D. jointly supervised in Tübingen and in Pisa in July 2020 with a dissertation focused on the mythical paradigm of Procne in Attic tragedy. Her main research interests are Attic tragedy (especially Sophocles), ancient epics, mythical examples, rhetoric, fragmentary poetry and digital critical editions.
