Secondary statistical & comparative survey data are used to identify the characteristics of contemporary democracies, including popular legitimacy, competitive politics, representative government, & the maintenance of citizens' civil, political, & social rights. Indices of social & economic conditions are related to democratic stability in both newer & the older, well-established democratic systems.
