Discusses the commonly held notion that the spread of Islam means Muslims across the globe are mobilizing in a struggle against secularism, the West, liberal democracy, & modernity in general. The Iranian revolution, Lebanon's Hezbollah, the Taliban in Afghanistan, & Osama bin Laden's network all suggest the existence of a transnational Islamic identity encompassing shared values, norms, & practices. Various understandings of identity are examined, along with factors affecting formation of an Islamic identity, & cases in which Islamic identity was/is related to political movements. It is argued that the multifaceted narrative fields represented by Islamic identity suggest its mobilizing capacity is no greater than that of any other identity. The level of coordination suggested by discussions of an Islamic identity not only does not exist, but also ignores diverse historical contexts, as well as the mechanisms & political opportunities needed for effective mobilization. The notion of a dangerous Islamic identity overlooks the reality that Islamic groups that oppose liberal democracy & capitalism are far outnumbered by those that share common ground with the West. J.
