À partir de documents d'époque (tracts, textes militants, essais), l'auteur s'interroge sur les modes de légitimation de la violence révolutionnaire dans les principales organisations d'extrême gauche de l'après-1968 en France, Italie et RFA. Trois missions sont assignées aux contestataires par le recours à la violence : le devoir historique, l'exigence éthique et le besoin de libération. Inégalement défendues par les différents groupes, elles témoignent, avec le temps, d'une vision toujours plus subjective, voire individualiste, du devoir-être révolutionnaire.

1969-1974 is the genesis period of the italian armed struggle. It is mainly characterized by the efforts made by the first fighting groups to construct a filiation with the Resistance movement. Their regard to mimesis makes clear the wbole construction of the "cause" of violence and the mobilization of ressources (names, patterns of action). The symbolic struggle between the extreme-left and the PCI can be understood in the same way. Breaking Laws: Violence and Civil Disobedience in Protest questions the complex relationship between social movements and violence through two contrasted lenses; first through the short-lived radical left wing post '68 revolutionary violence, and secondly in the present diffusion of civil disobedience actions, often at the border between non-violence and violence. This book shows how and why violence occurs or does not, and what different meanings it can take. The short-lived extreme left revolutionary groups that grew out of May '68 and the opposition to the Vietnam War (such as the German Red Army Faction, the Italian Red Brigades, and the Japanese Red Army) are without any doubt on the violent side. More ambiguous are the burgeoning contemporary forms of "civil" disobedience, breaking the law with the aim of changing it. In theory, these efforts are associated with non-violence and self-restraint. In practice, the line is more difficult to trace, as much depends on how political players define and frame non-violence and political legitimacy.

Pourtant, les images des violences politiques s'invitent chaque jour dans nos salons : attentats, dégradations d'équipements publics, séquestrations, etc. Prenant froidement le parti des chiffres, les auteurs ont constitué une base inédite de quelque 6 000 épisodes de violence politique survenus de 1986 à nos jours, en les catégorisant selon la nature de la cause défendue : idéologique, indépendantiste, religieuse, professionnelle ou sociétale. Leur approche à la fois quantitative et narrative, portant sur une trentaine d'années, fait tomber nombre de présupposés du débat politico-médiatique. Sans masquer la tragédie des attaques terroristes ni les manifestations émeutières des années récentes, elle nuance l'idée d'un regain de violence politique en France, où le nombre d'atteintes aux personnes est aujourd'hui très inférieur à celui des atteintes aux biens. Elle confirme un net recul de la violence indépendantiste, mais révèle aussi toute la palette d'expressions d'une colère grandissante contre la démocratie représentative. Isabelle Sommier est professeure de sociologie politique à l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et chercheure au Centre européen de sociologie et de science politique (CESSP).
