Romania's strategic position in Europe has been underpinned in recent years by an effective foreign policy focused unconditionally on integration with Europe through membership of the EU & NATO, which would do much for the country's security in a region historically prone to turbulence. Yet in order to gain Western support for modernization & security, Romania must first meet certain economic & human rights criteria. The article begins by reviewing Romania's history from the overthrow of Ottoman control to the present day. It goes on to discuss how Romania has managed its socially & economically disparate regions to maximize growth & how, externally, it has managed its relations with neighboring states to ensure regional stability thereby preparing the way for possible EU & NATO membership. 1 Table, 2 Figures, 64 References.
