Evidence of assortative mating according to personality was reported in a previous SOEP-based study (Rammstedt & Schupp, 2008). Based on population representative data of almost 7,000 couples, high levels of congruence between spouses were found, which increased with marriage duration. Almost 5,000 of these couples were tracked over a five-year period with personality assessed at the beginning and end of this time, which allowed us to investigate the relationship between personality congruence and marriage duration longitudinally. Using this data, we investigated (a) whether personality congruence is predictive for partnership longevity and whether congruence therefore differs between subsequently stable and instable couples, (b) if stable couples become more congruent, and (c) if separated couples become less congruent with regard to their personality over time. The results provide initial evidence of personality congruence as a predictor for partnership longevity: the more congruent couples are in the personality domain of Openness, the more stable their partnership. In addition, we found no indications of an increase in personality congruence over time within the stable couples; within the separated couples, however, a strong decrease in congruence was detectable.

Whereas most of the discourses focus on the deinstitutionnalisation of the couple, on the autonomy of the couple as regards the society, and the independence of the partners, the analysis of the sociability of young people living in couple offers a more paradoxical vision of these transformations. The strong process of the conjugality of sociability shifts from a certain number of traditional images about the autonomy of the couple. With the analysis of the separate spaces of sociability, how are the different networks worked out to constitute a new common and friendly horizon ? This paper aims to understand the role played by these links in the setting up and preservation of the conjugal ties.

In clinical assessment of violence between members of a couple, the practitioner's focus is expanded from the abusive incident and crisis stage to a view of couple dynamics during nonviolent periods. Often, couples view the noncrisis period as the norm and true state of the marriage, and violence is seen as an aberration. Issues such as emotional dependency, fear of rejection and abandonment, and shifting power balance between partners need to be addressed. The complexities of interaction and meaning surrounding the violence as well as the role of violence in the couple system allow for selective, differential use of an array of interventions.
