International audience ; Semiological analysis helps to construct a theory of mechanisms by which sports champions are celebrated. The study of correlations between "heroism" and "performance" in marks of 21 champions given by "L'Equipe" readers, shows for narrative organisation: - the champion facing adversity - the champion unfairness - the account of the hero's quest - the champion who shed his blood to become greater. In any case, it is not the result, but the way of winning or losing which makes a hero.

Abstract The notion of the hero is often accompanied by myth; in Gramsci's work we see the crushing of this theory because it is tied to a nationalist and, therefore, repressive horizon. In his Prison Notebooks, Gramsci tackles this problem with originality, critically defining the concept of heroism as anti-collective. The power of the struggling community acts incisively if it renounces charismatic leadership. This results in a leaderless collectivity made up of bodies and brains politically in action. The centrality of this aspect that is not dealt with in Gramsci's work can shed new light on the work of the Sardinian thinker and philosopher, particularly from a contemporary point of view, partly due to the numerous nationalist regressions (the return of racist ideologies and formations in Europe and in the US). Gramsci's work has an avant-garde meaning even in current events. The collectivity can become that specific universal-singular capable of instituting a real counter-power. The article investigates the rejection of heroism in a transversal reading of Prison Notebooks.

Each November, Americans celebrate Veterans Day, a holiday that honors our armed services and that marks the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Veterans Day roughly coincides with Remembrance Day in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, where millions of people wear poppies-a flower that bloomed across the battlefields of Flanders and became emblematic of the war-and observe a period of silence at war memorials. For many countries around the world, this day is meant to thank those who give their lives to defend liberty and freedom, but as Ted Harrison reve

This paper seeks to contribute to the literature on political judgment by proposing that the faculty of judgment is essential for responsibly coping with the undeniable fact of distant suffering and the controversial duty of humanitarian intervention. To achieve this end, Mahmood Mamdani's text 'The Politics of Naming: Genocide, Civil War, Insurgency' will be mobilized for a constructive dialogue about which specific conception of political judgment is at stake when we debate a situation like Darfur today. The main claim is that political judgment in times of acute crisis requires the members of the public sphere to strike a precarious balance between two contradictory impulses: the deliberative impulse to enlarge the pool of particular standpoints, and the decisionist impulse to finally bring the conversation to a halt and adopt a normative stance. The theoretical framework for this balanced view of the faculty of judgment will be articulated through a hybridization of Hannah Arendt's notion of an 'enlarged mentality' and Jacques Derrida's concept of an 'aporetic decision'.
