Anhand eines 1983 von Thailand abgelehnten japanischen Wirtschaftshilfekredits, der mit Auflagen verbunden war, werden die japanischen Wirtschaftsbeziehungen zu den "wichtigen" und "unwichtigen" ASEAN-Ländern behandelt. Es wird außerdem eine Befragung der thailändischen Bevölkerung über ihre Beurteilung der japanischen Wirtschaftspolitik in Thailand und der japanischen Menschen auch über das japanische Thai-Bild wiedergegeben. Imhoff's Beitrag befaßt sich mit der Bevölkerungs- und Altersentwicklung in Japan und mit dem daraus resultierenden sozialpolitischen Problemen. Die japanische Entwicklung im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhundert wird mit den entsprechenden Befunden für Deutschland verglichen. Es zeigen sich grundsätzliche unterschiedliche Entwicklungen in den beiden Ländern sowohl im Hinblick auf das Ansteigen der Lebenserwartung als auch bezüglich des Altersprozesses der Gesellschaft. Für Japan erfolgte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg eine beinahe explosionsartige Ausweitung der Lebensspanne, eine Entwicklung, die in Deutschland früher einsetzte und allmählicher verlief. Die Auswirkungen der veränderten Altersstruktur auf das soziale Leben in Japan, das Hervortreten von Elementen einer individualistischen Lebensführung und die publizistische und wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Phänomenen werden vom Verfasser ausführlich und unter Rückgriff auf japanische Literatur geschildert.
