Chapter La componente romanza del lessico ucraino
In: Biblioteca di Studi Slavistici
Ukrainian, unlike other East Slavic languages, is characterized by the active use of significant lexical components derived from Romance, Germanic, and West Slavic languages. This article presents a brief overview of the presence of Romance language lexical elements in Ukrainian and lays the groundwork for further research on the Ukrainian alloglot lexis and the comparison of Ukrainian with Russian and Belarusian.
Slavic Literary Microlanguages Amid Internationalisation Trends (Based on Examples from the Codified Language of the Banat Bulgarians)
The aim of the paper is to present some problems related to the present situation of the Banat Bulgarian Language spoken in Romania. After 1943 the literary tradition of the Banat Bulgarians was interrupted. Printed media stopped functioning, the language was not taught in schools and its function was limited to liturgy and everyday oral communication. The revival of this micro language started in 1989 with the introduction of changes in the social, political and cultural life of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. This paper analyses the dynamics of the language and studies the extent to which processes of globalisation and internationalisation reflect its lexics. The main source used for observation and conclusions are the periodical "Náša glás" and "Literaturna miselj", published after 1989.

The aim of this paper is to call to attention a very large and important area of human factors engineering that is almost entirely neglected. This area consists of the language and the words that are attached to the tools, machines, systems, and operations with which human factors engineers are concerned. Examples, illustrations, and data are cited to show that changes in the words used in man-machine systems may produce greater improvements in performance than human engineering changes in the machine itself. Arguments are made that this province—the language and words of machines—is properly the concern of the human factors engineer, and not of the grammarian, linguist, or the communication theorist. The paper concludes with an outline of some of the kinds of work that needs to be done to fill these important gaps in our knowledge and technology.
Student Loans: Direct Loan Default Rates
A letter report issued by the General Accounting Office with an abstract that begins "This report focuses on the default rate for student loans. Two major federal student loan programs, the Federal Direct Loan Program (FDLP) and the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), together provided student borrowers with about 9 million loans totaling about $42.9 billion in fiscal year 1999. The most recent student loan default rate statistics for schools showed that, overall, the direct and guaranteed student loan programs had similar default rates: at 6.6 percent for FDLP and 6.7 percent for FFELP. The two programs had similar default rates when the comparisons focused on the type of school. FDLP has two types of loans, consolidated and nonconsolidated. Generally, borrowers with consolidated loans who used the standard payment plan had a lower default rate than did borrowers with nonconsolidated loans. However, when income contingent repayment plans were used, borrowers with consolidated loans had a higher default rate than did those with nonconsolidated loans. The Department of Education uses various procedures to ensure that loans are properly serviced and collected, including independent monitoring and external assessments of monitoring results."

Influenza della primavera araba sul lessico arabo e italiano
The Arab Spring has carried out radical changes in the political system of several Arab countries like Egypt. Due to the Arab spring in Egypt, new terms have become part of the Arabic language and existing words have acquired a particular meaning; the Italian language also goes along with this, producing equivalent terms, despite the non-congruence between the two languages. This work is a linguistic study that concerns the semantic and lexical evolution in terms and entire phrases in Egypt before and after 25 January 2011. The study aims at shedding light on the etymology of the Arab lexemes and their meaning and the particular meaning acquired during the events of the Arab Spring with the aim of clarifying the cause of its formation. It is particularly difficult to translate them in the Italian press that uses more than one translation strategy to ensure as much as possible the fidelity and clarity of the text. Therefore, in this contribution we have examined the direct translation strategies thoroughly, such as loan word, calque and literal translation, sometimes followed by a paraphrase, useful for making explicit a new concept to a foreign reader.
