The location of activities and the need for interactions create a demand for transport. The mode of transport choices for travelling to commercial centres has always been varied. However, private car use has been the most frequently used mode of transport. As a case study, this study explores how retail trade has influenced transport mode choice in the Elim commercial area in Makhado Local Municipality, South Africa. A mixed method approach was adopted using secondary data and a questionnaire survey to acquire data amongst customers in the Elim commercial area. A Cronbach Alpha test using the survey data was done to check the data's reliability and internal consistency achieving a Cronbach ? = 0.903, which indicates that the survey data is reliable. The results show that the retail trade area increased in minibus taxis and local people walking to the node where the retail trade is located. The study concluded that the land-use structure in the local area significantly influenced the transportation mode.
The process and criteria for freight modal choice behavior in Greece were investigated in research between 2004 and 2009. The work involved a large-scale survey of various freight transport actors in Greece; a full statistical analysis of the results and a presentation to determine priorities, preferences, and detailed rankings of mode choice criteria; and a modeling exercise to produce models that depict the mode choice behavior of Greek firms. This paper discusses the questionnaire survey, characteristics of the participating firms, the decision-making process used for choosing the mode of transport, and the criteria used for mode choice decision making in Greece. The results contain conclusions and data that can be used to describe mode choice behavior in freight transport not only in Greece but also in other countries. These are summarized as reliability and quality of transport services, transport cost, characteristics of the transport chain, and the prevailing governmental policy and its corresponding legal framework for operation of the transport market. A future paper will contain the results of the modeling exercise and the various models of freight mode choice behavior that were formed.
The diversity of transportation modes that already exist today results in competition in the choice of modes, so that there are modes that are very much favored and used by travellers to achieve a destination. This study aims to observe the behavior of travelers who use public transportation buses with rail transportation in the city of Jakarta and the city of Surabaya in order to know the factors that influence travelers in making mode choices, in order to obtain a mode selection model that can explain the probability of travelers in choose the mode of urban transportation. For the city of Jakarta, research was conducted on the Hotel Indonesia – Blok M corridor, while in the city of Surabaya the research was conducted on transportation from Sidoarjo to Surabaya. The research was conducted by distributing questionnaires and direct observations in the field, then processed by the binary logit method to obtain multiple regression equations that describe the relationship between variables. The results of the study indicate that people are more likely to choose the bus mode of transportation with consideration of cheaper costs and faster arrivals to their destination. The results of this study can be used by local governments and transportation providers to improve urban transportation services in the city of Jakarta and the city of Surabaya.
This paper presents the procedure for building Belgrade transport model as a tool for the optimization of Belgrade transport system development. City Council of Belgrade financed the Belgrade Transport Model (BeTraMod). It was a first experience of city government of Belgrade in developing huge data basis about transport system using software. This way defined model can be used by different users as official basis for calculations to respective authorities or local self-government organizations, whose activities are directly connected to planning, programming, management and building of transport system; basis of various research and scientific-research projects; basis for the appraisal process; basis for search of the optimal solutions of traffic regime; basis of intelligent transport systems in the portion of dynamic traffic control. Since BeTraMod is created it was already used for project documentation of three projects: pre-feasibility study and general project of lnner-city Ring Road, pre-feasibility study and general project of Light Rail Transport and feasibility study of Bypass road of Belgrade.
Die Entwicklung der regionalen Wirtschaft, des Handels und damit des Wohlstands hängen eng mit der zur Verfügung stehenden Verkehrsinfrastruktur zusammen. Der Verkehrssektor sorgt für die Mobilität von Personen sowie für den effizienten Austausch von Gütern und Nachrichten und lässt die Bedeutung räumlicher Distanzen in den Hintergrund treten. Hierbei sind sämtliche Bereiche des Verkehrs- und Informationswesens von Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Datenkompilation informiert über unterschiedliche Aspekte des Verkehrs durch die Zusammenstellung ausgewählter Zeitreihen aus der Verkehrsstatistik für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Sie enthält insgesamt 1034 Zeitreihen, die sich größtenteils auf den Zeitraum der früheren und der heutigen Bundesrepublik Deutschland in den Grenzen vom 3. Oktober 1990 erstrecken. Für die Bestände an Kraftfahrzeugen und der Eisenbahnen konnten auch Werte erhoben werden, die in die Zeit des Deutschen Reiches 1870 und 1907 zurückreichen. Durch unterschiedliche Erhebungssystematiken kann die Vergleichbarkeit der Werte einer Zeitreihe eingeschränkt werden. In solchen Fällen wird in den zellen- und spaltenspezifischen Anmerkungen darauf hingewiesen.
Im Mittelpunkt der Kompilation steht der funktionale Aspekt des Verkehrs. Es werden Angaben zu den Fahrzeugbeständen, Verkehrswegen und Transportleistungen der Verkehrszweige – mit Ausnahme des Luftverkehrs – dargestellt. Hinzu kommen Tabellen zum Verkehrshaushalt des Bundes, zu den Verkehrs-Ausgaben des Bundes, zu den Investitionen in das Verkehrssystem und zu dem Bundes-Vermögen der Verkehrsanlagen.
Die Bestände und Neuzulassungen der Kraftfahrzeuge werden nach Kraftfahrzeugtyp, nach Hubraumklasse, Antriebsart sowie bei Neuzulassungen zusätzlich nach Berufsgruppe des Halters differenziert. Für die Bahnen werden Wagenbestände, Anzahl der Bahnhöfe, der Anschlüsse und der Bahnübergänge wiedergegeben. Für den Bereich der Binnenschifffahrt werden die Schiffsbestände nach Schiffstypen, Tragfähigkeit und durchschnittliches Alter berichtet.
Angaben zu Transport- und Beförderungsleistungen nach Verkehrszweigen für den Personen- und Güterverkehr werden nach den Verkehrsleistungen dargestellt, wobei auf einzelne Verkehrszweige in gesonderten Tabellen noch einmal vertiefend und mit weiterer Ausdifferenzierung eingegangen wird. Bei dem Gütertransport wird für den Straßenverkehr und die Binnenschifffahrt die Transportmenge und -leistung zusätzlich nach Gütergruppen aufgegliedert.
In vergleichbarer Weise werden die Verkehrsunfälle nach Verkehrszweigen und nach Art der Verkehrsbeteiligung tabellarisch wiedergegeben, wobei auf Unfälle im Luftverkehr, im Eisenbahnverkehr und im Strassenverkehr anschließend gesondert und vertiefend eingegangen wird. Aufgrund der verfügbaren Datenlage bilden die Angaben zu den Strassenverkehrsunfällen einen deutlichen Schwerpunkt.
Die Datenkompilation wird abgeschlossen mit ausgewählten Kennziffern im EU-Vergleich.

Freight Transport and the Modern Economy adapts a well-known textbook by Michel Savy, revising, extending and updating it for British, European and international readers. It deals not only with the technical aspects of transport, logistics and supply chain management, but also the interactions between transport professionals and the public authorities in the modern social, political, economic and environmental context. The transport of freight is presented as a system, mixing empirics and theory, showing how transport itself functions and also its strong influence on the modern economy, with a growing volume of production, turnover and employment. The nature of freight transport, an industrial process widely marketed as a service, is analysed in depth, explaining the main characteristics of the transport operation, its market and the regulatory context. The main actors, the professional actors (carriers, shippers and other agents) and the public authorities are introduced, and their behaviour and interactions are clarified. The article analyzes economic and political trends, determinants and problems of transport system, infrastructure and logistics development in the modern world. This is based on the assumption that the world transport system is a combination of national and regional transport systems, including a set of interconnected and interacting modes of transport, and vice versa. The author argued that the world transport system is characterized by territorial-geographical and pro- file-species structure and it can be classified by level of organization, geographical indication, level of development, modes of transport and infrastructure, etc. It is revealed that the development trends of the main modes of transport are related to the basic world economic processes, in particular to world production and trade. At the same time, it is proved that the world transport system is conditioned not only socio-economically, but also politically, in particular by the actions of the state, society or its individual segments both inside and outside the state.
