Purpose
This purpose of this paper is to concern with the extent to which social economies can be constructed as alternatives to private and state markets and their purported neoliberal tendencies.


Design/methodology/approach
The paper presents a meta-evaluation of an integrated set of projects supported by philanthropic investment to build finance, skills, entrepreneurship, social enterprises and non-monetised trading in the age sector in Northern Ireland.


Findings
The programme had important successes in stimulating social entrepreneurship, improving employability and showing how social enterprises can be incubated and scaled to offer new services for older people. It also improved skills in contract readiness, but this did not translate into new borrowing or trading models, even among larger NGOs.


Research limitations/implications
In that all economies are, to some extent, constructed and socially mediated, there is value in thinking through the components, relationships and projects that might make the ecosystem work more effectively. This should not just offer a counterweight to the market but could explore how an alternative arena for producing and consuming goods and services can be formed, especially among potentially vulnerable age communities.


Originality/value
The albeit, small-scale investment in a range of interrelated projects shows not only the value in experimentation but also the limits in planned attempts to construct social markets. The analysis shows that social economies need to respond to the priorities of older people, grown from community initiatives and better connected to the capabilities and resources of the sector.

The ongoing institutional changes indicate of the growing role of the social economy in the structure of the market economy of European countries. The article analyzes the challenges for the development of the social economy at the present stage, which arise both in the EU countries and in Ukraine. The author summarizes the trends of the social economy development at the present stage and substantiates the priorities for the development of the social economy in Ukraine. Author justifies algorithm of the implementation of the development of the social economy priorities. The directions of stimulating the development of the social economy in Ukraine are highlighted based on the generalization of the practice and experience of the European Union on institutional support for the development of the social economy.

This book is an authoritative and comprehensive guide to the essential relationship between markets and morals. Smith, Burke and Marx, Durkheim, Polyani and Hayek - all sought to situate market exchange and property-based acquisitiveness in the broader context of human interaction and social values. This framework of interdependence and ethics embeds the capitalist market economy in an ongoing whole of which the calculative present-day is but a part. The book argues that the stability of conservatism anchors the dynamism of entrepreneurship in a matrix of patterns and habits without which orderly free enterprise would be at risk of degenerating into the Hobbesian war of each against all.

This thesis explores the combination of two models that, at first sight, seem to be opposed: the social economy and uberization. Companies such as La Ruche qui dit Oui! appear to be combining both successfully, raising questions regarding the benefits of such an association, leading us to our research question: Are the social economy and uberization compatible and could they strengthen each other? By asking this question, the goal is to critically determine first if the two models could exist together, and then whether the uberized social economy would be desirable, making the existing models stronger, or instead jeopardizing them. The first part clarifies the two key concepts, namely the social economy and uberization. After an in depth analysis of the existing definitions, we proposed definitions for the two models then identified their origins, gave a factual overview of their current state and summarized their essential characteristics. In the second part, the two concepts are compared using different methodologies in order to analyze their compatibility. As a result, we propose a framework highlighting three central discussion points in the assessment of the desirability of the uberized social economy: the digitalization, the values and principles and the regulation. By looking in-depth at these three and by illustrating the theoretical findings with the practical case of La Ruche qui dit Oui, we have been able to draw conclusions on the desirability of the uberized social economy. First, from a digital point of view, the uberized social economy would be desirable as it brings an added value to the social economy, thanks to the use of digital platforms connecting peers directly. Second, the specific values and principles characterizing the social economy could strengthen uberized models that currently lack established principles, ensuring the respect of their collaborative nature. Yet, our analysis suggests that as long as the values are not established as legal rules in the organization, the desirability and sustainability of the uberized social economy will always be threatened. Therefore, part of the answer to our research question was found in the analysis of the regulation and more precisely of "Platform Cooperativism". Platform cooperativism seems to be a sustainable and desirable structure for the uberized social economy, giving leads to overcome the weaknesses of both models. This confirms that, when combined, the models can strengthen each other. First, it would enable cooperatives to leverage the opportunities that P2P platforms offer, tackling cooperatives' possible lack of attractiveness and efficiency. Second, the shared-ownership and shared-governance specific to cooperatives would ensure a fair distribution of the value created to all members and the respect of the social economy's values and principles. This would help avoid the dilution of the values and principles over time detected in commercial social enterprises. Third, realizing the potential of cooperative platforms as a way to tackle the social tensions of uberization and foster innovation at the same time, the European Union is showing increasing interest. AbstractAfter examining the arguments in favour of social economy activities, this article argues that recent initiatives in this area in the Republic of Ireland have not reached maximum potential. Three factors are regarded as holding back performance. One is that the necessary institutional conditions to promote the social economy have not been established. Another is that many initiatives are overburdened with unrealistic objectives, which have given rise to what is termed social economy failures. Finally, many of the community‐based employment initiatives designed to improve labour market access for disadvantaged individuals have not been ambitious enough. Government and civic associations are identified as the main culprits for the underperforming social economy. The conclusion suggests that fresh thinking and new approaches are required on the topic.
